You are self-quarantining at home, washing your hands extremely well, and practicing social distancing (6 feet apart from another person or almost 2 meters). Now what?
You can start making your own face masks at home. But how? Here are some tips that I’m using:
1. Four layers of cloth that are made from cotton
2. Needle and thread
3. Rubber bands
A few things to keep in mind:
• Homemade masks will not protect you like a N95 mask will because it has not been fitted for your face, has not undergone special testing to block particulate matter, nor does it have an extremely strong seal around your face.
• Homemade masks are to give you some level of protection when you are in the environment of going to get gas for your car and getting groceries, or taking a walk outside, and in your home if someone is not well.
• The Coronavirus stays in the air for about 30 minutes when someone coughs, sneezes, or expels some mucus and saliva from their mouth or nose.
• Some protection is better than no protection.
• It is not hard to create a face mask with basic materials if you cannot sew, you can use staples to hold it together. The important thing is having enough layers of cloth that is cotton. The recommended amount is 4 layers, or more.
• You can wash the homemade face masks daily, and re-use them again.
