Job Description:

The University of Maine 4-H Camp and Learning Centers at Tanglewood and Blueberry Cove provide environmentally focused summer camps for Maine youth in Lincolnville and Tenants Harbor. Programs emphasize community living, respect for others, fun, safety, responsibility, and the joy of being a part of the natural world. Tanglewood and Blueberry Cove offer weekly residential summer camp programs for young people ages 8-14 (approximately 30-60/session). Our mission is to teach Maine youth and adults to be effective and caring citizens of the earth through environmental education and nature based experiences.  We strive to develop lifelong skills and a sense of community spirit.

As an educator your role is similar to that of a camp counselor, with the additional responsibility of planning and leading a mastery program. Program tract options for interns may include: sustainability, garden to table, creative arts, marine science, watershed ecology, STEAM initiatives, and adventure recreation. In addition to leading morning programs, you will also lead activities in the afternoon. We give a lot of freedom in the activities you lead, so long as they have some educational value and are safe. Share your skills knowledge and passions. Activities can be arty, nature-based, sporty or musical; the choice is yours. Support and guidance is available throughout the summer and our staff-training program provides lots of ideas, skills and time to plan.


  • Live in a cabin with campers and, along with a co-counselor, create the necessary atmosphere for a positive camp experience. (staff/camper ratio = 1:4)
  • Role model healthy living, positive energy and clear communication
  • Engage actively with campers during program activities, cabin times, meal times
  • Coordinate, implement and evaluate a hands-on curriculum for youth in a week-long, 2.5 hour morning program “focus” using the learning objectives set forth by UMaine 4-H Camps. 
  • Organize displays, projects, resource materials and supplies, which will serve to stimulate campers, parents, and staff
  • Plan and lead approximately six one-hour afternoon “elective” activities per week
  • Help to plan and carry out other camp activities such as: special events, opening and closing ceremonies, evening programs, campfires, etc
  • Participate in staff meetings and contribute to the ongoing improvement of the camp program
  • Role model good stewardship for the environment, and support our efforts by participating in the garden, composting, and sustainable practices throughout all aspects of your role
  • Participate in community chores, meal service, and miscellaneous maintenance duties as required


  • Motivation to work with children in a high energy, outdoor setting
  • Role model conservation ethic, healthy living, positive energy and clear communication.
  • Must demonstrate responsible and safe decision making skills in all aspects of outdoor camp programming.
  • Flexible, creative, team player, appreciate the natural world
  • Self-motivated, able to both lead and follow
  • Completed 2nd year of college or with equivalent experience in teaching area
  • Previous camp or related experience working with youth
  • Ability to lead groups outdoors over various terrain (camp trails and facility), carrying a small backpack with teaching and first aid supplies
  • First Aid and basic life support certification (CPR)
  • Preferred: lifeguard certification
