Job Description:

Coordinate training of ambassador animals and ensure consistent training for AmeriCorps members, Zoo staff, and volunteers. Mentor AmeriCorps members in animal training, and maintain communication between Conservation Education and Animal Welfare departments. Works directly under Conservation Education Manager and will work closely alongside Racine Zoo AmeriCorps Program Coordinator to ensure guidance and mentorship for AmeriCorps members.

AmeriCorps Animal Ambassador Coordinator
REPORTS TO: Curator of Animal Care and Conservation Education
JOB CLASSIFICATION: Grant-funded full time salary position, temporary, extension likely based on job performance and available funding. Position dependent on grant funding.

♦ Animal handling and animal training following all appropriate protocol and procedures
♦ Mentorship and training of animal handlers at a variety of levels
♦ Ability to work with a variety of small mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates
♦ Occasional work in educational programming and Zoo events both on and off Zoo grounds. All fundraising events will be on Zoo time rather than AmeriCorps time.
♦ Ability to give professional and knowledgeable talks about and alongside Zoo animals and activities in a variety of settings, including but not limited to, classrooms, college lectures, and live and prerecorded television and radio shoots
♦ Other duties as needed, assigned in accordance with the allowable activities approved by AmeriCorps policies when on AmeriCorps time.

QUALIFICATIONS: Requires a BS in Zoology, Biology, Ecology, Education, or a related field. Previous experience training behaviors and mentoring staff is required. Superb organizational skills and ability to prioritize tasks is a must. Requires strong writing, speaking, and organization skills including the ability to multi-task. Proven ability to interact with other staff, guests, volunteers, and community partners and to maintain an energetic and positive attitude. Must be able to work with a variety of animals. Must possess or be able to obtain valid a Wisconsin’s driver’s license. Previous educational experience and previous experience with AmeriCorps is a plus. Experience with AZA-accredited zoos or aquariums preferred. Must pass a criminal history check. Must have, or be willing to learn, basic first-aid and CPR. Negative TB test required. Ability to work outdoors, lift heavy objects, and risk periodic exposure to fairly predictable and controllable hazards associated with wild animals and zoonotic diseases. 

Position is full time with benefits, compensation is $25,000/year.
