During summer months House In The Wood is a residential camp that serves children from low income areas of Chicago. We focus on fostering cooperation, creativity, generosity, responsibility and kindness in our campers, so that they may enrich their lives and the communities to which they return. During the spring and fall, House In The Wood is a residential Outdoor Education Center. We provide our students with hands on interactive lessons that promote students to learn by seeing and taking part in natural processes themselves.
AmeriCorps / Interns are required to live on site. Most weekends are off from January-May, during the summer months every other weekend will be required. Out of season service includes (but not limited to) support with: Recruitment and onboarding of staff, recruitment of campers, groups and volunteers, program development, generating and maintaining program areas and program outreach.
During Summer Camp and OE seasons AmeriCorps will be responsible for up to 14 children either in a cabin or trail group. As the Leaders of their group they will serve as, educators, mentors, and guardians.
House In The Wood provides Members with housing, food, health insurance, and access to its facilities. In addition, this position provides training and skill development along with essential experience in the professional fields of Camp, Outdoor Education and Recreation.
AmeriCorps applicants must be U.S. citizens or a legal permanent resident. Members are provided a living stipend of $6,265 (before tax), and an education award $2,887.50 upon completion of the program.
