LOCATION: Spearfish, South Dakota

DESCRIPTION: Black Hills State University is seeking to fill a tenure-track, Assistant Professor of Outdoor Education position within the College of Education and Behavioral Sciences. The position begins August 2022. 

The successful candidate will be committed to excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service and will have the ability to collaborate effectively across disciplines; teach classroom and field-based theory and skills in a variety of outdoor pursuits and environments; effectually navigate all aspects of outdoor learning.
Duties for this position include teaching undergraduate courses, overseeing internships, and advising students in the Outdoor Education discipline; coordinating the Outdoor Education major, minor, and Certificate in Adventure Education, engaging in appropriate research/scholarly activities; and leading or coordinating service activities. 
*A terminal degree in a relevant field
*ABD considered – degree completion must occur no later than July 1, 2023. The 2022/2023 contract will be a term contract at the Instructor level, $4000 lower than the terminal degree compensation. The 2023/24 contract will include $4,000 salary increase and assistant professor rank reflecting degree completion. Upon request, one-year prior service may be applied toward promotion and tenure, with BHSU and BOR approval. 
*Thorough understanding of and demonstrated ability to convey current best practices in Outdoor Education related to (1) teaching classroom and field-based theory and skills, (2) risk assessment and management, and (3) leadership and programming
*ability to obtain field-based health-safety certification
* specialized expertise in at least two of the following areas: (1) environmental education programs (2) interpretation and interpretive media, (3) adventure skills – land, (4) adventure skills – aquatic, (5) adventure skills – emergencies. 

*Online and hybrid teaching experience
