Norman Bird Sanctuary seeks a dynamic educator to serve as its Camp Director for the 2021 season. This role is responsible for developing and guiding Norman Bird Sanctuary’s award-winning Summer Camp. Norman Bird Sanctuary seeks applicants with a demonstrated commitment to collaboration and those interested in building a diverse team to achieve our mission. We advance environmental literacy and promote stewardship through engaging programs for all ages. Norman Bird Sanctuary seeks to meet the educational needs and demand from our community of schools, teachers, parents, students and other partner organizations for outdoor environmental education programs that connect to Norman Bird Sanctuary’s 325-acre campus.

The Camp Director conceptualizes and manages educational, experiential programs for Norman Bird Sanctuary’s seasonal day camp. This full-time seasonal contract position oversees all aspects of camp, including designing and implementing education curricula, providing operational oversight of camp, and managing all camp personnel. The camp season runs from approximately late June to mid-August with a few trainings in early June.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the Summer Camp operation in its entirety.
  • Design interactive and interdisciplinary camp programs that focus on ecology and natural history, team building, and adventure education while maximizing the use of our outdoor classroom spaces.
  • Provide enthusiastic and innovative instruction through hands-on and inquiry-based methods that encourage exploration, awareness, appreciation, and stewardship of the natural environment.
  • Recruit, hire, train, and supervise camp staff and interns.
  • Oversee the health and well-being of all campers and staff; ensure that all camp programs meet appropriate health, safety, and legal requirements.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Maintain camp enrollment software (e.g., CampMinder) and enrollment portal through NBS website
  • Track membership status and payments of enrolled families with Finance Department
  • Manage camp scholarship requests and awards
  • Manage all communication with camp families
  • Ensure all enrollment paperwork is completed by families
  • Provide excellent customer service for camp families
  • Manage camp curriculum development and implementation
  • Manage camp cleaning procedures and protocols
  • Manage weekly schedules and age group distributions
  • Develop strategic partnerships (camp programs, salary offset, etc.)
  • Oversee camp equipment maintenance, preparation, storage, and inventory
  • Maintain alignment of NBS camp policies and procedures with best practice standards set by the American Camp Association
  • Assist in the accurate check-in/check-out of campers and greeting parents
  • Assist during snack and meal breaks, preparing food as necessary
  • Maintain First Aid/CPR certification
  • Create and manage camp budget with input from Director of Finance and Administration and Executive Director
  • Work closely with Finance Department to track camp income and expenses
  • Manage camp evaluation  
  • Additional Duties:
    • Provide animal care as needed
    • Assist with NBS programs and events as needed
