The Peabody Essex Museum, one of the largest and most dynamic art museums in the nation, is seeking a highly talented Director of Guest Experience as PEM embarks upon the final phase of its $650 million campaign to advance the museum’s mission. The Museum will be enhancing it’s already large endowment, adding over 40,000 sq. ft. of new space, including 15,000 sq. ft. of new galleries, and developing innovative interpretation strategies to re-install the entire suite of permanent collection galleries. PEM seeks to re-envision what an art museum can be in the 21st century. Come opening day in mid-2019, PEM will rank among the top 20 art museums in North America in terms of facility size and endowment.
The PEM guest experience must reflect this stature, as well as the Museum’s special creative energy, at every touch point. Ideally, a guest’s interaction, no matter how brief, advances a relationship based on important connections: intellectual connections to what is seen and learned; psychological and emotional connections to the organization; and personal connections to those with shared interests, both inside and outside PEM. How these connections are developed, strengthened and enhanced—prior to, during and following visits—will be the responsibility of the Director of Guest Experience and the dynamic new department s/he creates.
The position requires a bachelor’s degree and at least 5-7 years of work experience involving significant interaction with the public, preferably in a hospitality/tourism/attraction-like setting. Working knowledge of operations, standards, practices, and procedures of a museum or related environment highly desired but not required. Extremely collaborative in management style, with strong conflict resolution skills. Ability to work with a diverse public and represent the museum to its visitors in a positive and professional manner. Highly creative, entrepreneurial, and resourceful. Knowledgeable and passionate about creating a visitor-focused approach. Strong supervisory skills. Ability to train and motivate staff and volunteers. Interest in art and culture a real plus. Knowledge of PEM’s CRM system, Tessitura, is highly desired.
