Job Description:

Living Earth School is hiring a Director of Administration and Development to expand and facilitate our adult and youth nature connection programs based in Central Virginia. Only apply if: You have a 2-4 years of administrative experience and have experience in the field of nature connection.  

Position description:  This is a full-time position with an immediate start date and a competitive salary commensurate with experience as well as annual vacation.

Duties include office administration, coordinating day camps, and some fieldwork. The candidate should be community-minded, outgoing, a student of life, committed to nature education and personal growth, and has excellent skills to administrate efficiently.  The ideal start date for this position is January 31, 2018 after training with the Living Earth School team. 

The candidate should have at least 2-4 years of program administration experience, as well as at least 2 years of field experience in nature connection mentoring and the 8 shields model (

This is a great opportunity for someone to come into a fully set up, successful operation, with full programing established, ready to hit the ground running. We are looking to hire a qualified person with the necessary skills and experience to be a full administrator in the daily operation of the school and associated programming. 


Day-to-Day Office Management:

External communications
Registration and customer service
Payroll (data entry into a system)
The Knott’s run a second business each autumn (a corn maze festival) which also requires some administrative work that is included in this position

(Currently, Day-to-Day Office Management and Marketing have been held by an Administrative Assistant who is working two-three days a week, but who is leaving.)


Marketing/Social Media
Coordinating with our web developer for website changes
Community Outreach
Exploring program expansion to work with more diverse populations, potentially partnering with a non-profit
Fundraising for scholarship fund

Visioning and Executive Leadership

Helping hold overall vision with Executive Directors (Kate & Hub) and Program Coordinator (Erin-Soupy)
Make organizational decisions
Main contact for emergency response
Annual reports

Staff Management:

Hiring Staff
Mentoring staff and role-modeling the culture
Coordinating 5-10 staff throughout the school year and 10-20 during the summer
Coordination of day camps (managing and mentoring instructors on the ground in the summer)

Program Management:

Collaborate with the Program Coordinator and Summer Camp Coordinators
Staff and volunteer hiring
Performance management
Workforce planning
Collaboration on orientation and staff training
Internal communications
Coordinate Day Camps (this involves in the field management of Day Camp staff during the summer)

Field Work:

Ideally this person will maintain a real connection to fieldwork by taking on an instructor position at times.

Required Qualifications:

A love and connection with the natural world already established
Interest and personal investment in The Living Earth Schools mission

Bachelor’s Degree or an equivalent amount of training and/or work experience
Experience relevant to the role of the position

Team player with strong communication skills, people skills and friendly demeanor
Leadership qualities to guide staff and students
Ability to identify and achieve goals independently with strong work ethic
Exceptional multi-tasking, organizational and time management skills

Ability to learn and convey skill sets effectively

Ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position and have valid drivers license with a good driving record

Ability to complete and maintain applicable training and certifications as necessary
Ability to work flexible hours, which may include evenings and/or weekends, as appropriate
