Job Description:

The Director/VP of Education, working closely with the Chief Operations & Education Officer, will provide vision and direction for the Institute and education programs in Yellowstone. This position also collaborates with other leaders across the organization as a member of the senior leadership team. Based out of offices in Gardiner, Montana, this position is directly responsible for managing an operating budget of $2 million and leading a team of 6 managers who oversee a high-performing, mission-driven staff of 7ull-time employees, 12-15 seasonal instructors, 80 contract instructors, and 50 volunteers.  The Institute is integral in providing additional educational support for Yellowstone National Park. It is expected that the merger with the Yellowstone Park Foundation will lead to expanded opportunities as well. Current priorities include increasing the fill rate at our new field campus, developing educational programs for broader and more diverse audiences, including youth, and developing a model collaboration with NPS staff to provide Yellowstone’s education programs

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Provide strong leadership and strategic focus by supporting and overseeing the Institute management team, fostering a culture of collaboration and an emphasis on achieving results. The management team includes program managers, contact center manager, campus manager and operations manager.
  • Prepare and manage detailed annual budgets and work plans based on strategic priorities; monitor financial performance and achieve budget goals.
  • Oversee management of a broad selection of educational programs consistent with the mission and goals of YA and NPS; maintain the highest standards of educational quality and safety.
  • Take the lead in developing new partnerships and programs which advance the educational mission of YA.
  • Maintain excellent working relationships with NPS, the Yellowstone Park Foundation, Xanterra Parks & Resorts, and other park partners.
  • Serve as a member of YA’s senior leadership team and a collaborative partner in decisions regarding organizational strategy; attend board meetings and events as assigned.
  • Effectively communicate relevant Institute-related information across the organization
  • Ensure appropriate staffing levels and training of staff
  • Develop and motivate staff to achieve optimal performance
  • Travel into Yellowstone, throughout the Greater Yellowstone area and other, as required
  • Represent YA and its mission accurately and positively
  • Work collaboratively with staff across the Yellowstone Association
  • Other tasks as assigned by Chief Education & Operations Officer, or other designated leadership

Basic Qualifications:  

  • Demonstrated expertise in successfully leading people
  • Proven ability to manage a budget of more than $1 million as well as the supporting operations
  • Experience directing a place-based education programming with a professional staff
  • A bachelor’s degree in a related field
  • Proven ability to collaborate across functions within an organization
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Strong commitment to the educational mission of the Yellowstone Association
  • This position involves driving YA vehicles, therefore applicants must be 21 years of age or older, maintain a valid US driver’s license, and maintain a favorable driving record for insurance purposes.
  • The ability to pass and maintain YA Driver Training and a Department of Transportation medical exam
  • A satisfactory criminal background check are conditions of employment

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Experience with public land partnerships
  • Knowledge and experience with Yellowstone National Park
  • Experience working in a non-profit environment
  • An advanced degree in a related field


This is a full-time, year-round position.  Starting annual salary for this position is $65,000, or higher DOE. This position qualifies for the Yellowstone Association’s benefit package, which includes accrued vacation and sick/personal leave, ten paid holidays, retirement program, medical, dental, vision, life and AD&D insurance, and optional employee-funded Flexible Savings Account.
