Job Description:

Education Program Associate 3 (Summer Camps Programs Director)

Penn State's Outdoor Education Field Lab and Nature Center—Shaver's Creek Environmental Center (SCEC)—is seeking a creative, energetic, and self-motivated individual to manage their wildly popular portfolio of Summer Day Camps that enroll over 400 youth each summer. This Summer Camps Program Director position will also coordinate the seasonal Fall Harvest Festival featuring the Children's Halloween Trail held in late October that attracts nearly 2,000 community participants in one weekend, while simultaneously coordinating over 100 interns, students, community volunteers, and fellow staff to run the event.

Other responsibilities will include teaching Penn State courses as assigned each semester in areas of outdoor leadership, risk management, and youth programming. Oversight of Summer Day Camps includes, but is not limited to: managing the daily operations of six to eight weeks of on-site day camps for children ages four to twelve and Leaders-in-Training ages 12-18; developing relationships and communicating with families and children; ensuring curriculum meets client interests; cultivating relationships with PSU Colleges, Departments, and faculty to support PSU student engagement in blended learning opportunities; training, supervising, and hiring, training, and evaluating seasonal staff, PSU students, and volunteers in the delivery of camp programs; developing a budget and monitoring expenses to maximize financial resources; developing long-term plans for camp schedules and supporting marketing efforts to maximize camp enrollment; and maintaining accurate records of program related documents.

This position will also support Penn State, Outreach and Online Education, and Shaver's Creek's missions by actively participating in Center-wide strategic planning, ad hoc committees, several annual festivals, weekend Visitor Center Services, hiring committees, supervising seasonal staff, and other duties as assigned. Alongside a joy for teaching audiences of all ages in and about the natural world, successful candidates will have previous experience with youth summer camp administration. A successful candidate will become an integral member of a Shaver's Creek staff that prides itself on a culture of collaboration, shared decision making, respect, and trust from leadership to make decisions in individual program areas that benefit the strategic goals of the whole.

Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher plus four years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Master's degree preferred. Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication and self-management skills, ability to maintain confidentiality and accurate record keeping are essential. Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel are required. Candidates should also possess a strong environmental ethic consistent with the mission of Shaver's Creek Environmental Center; a zero-waste facility situated 12 miles from University Park campus within Penn State's 7,000 acre Stone Valley Forest. This is a fixed-term appointment funded for one year from date of hire with excellent possibility of re-funding.
