Calling all lovers of all things science related. If you are interested in sharing your passions with kids of all ages the Powerhouse Science Center is looking for you. We are seeking an educator to join us in our mission of conducting informal educational programs in and out of the building.
Powerhouse Science Center has served the Sacramento region for 60 years as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit agency, providing an informal hands-on educational experience for children, families and school groups in 19 counties. We are in transition to become a world-class STEM education center for all ages – raising funds for a major expansion to relocate to the historic PG&E Powerhouse building along the Sacramento River north in downtown.
This is a unique opportunity for a passionate informal educator interested in joining our growing team.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Part-time Education Specialist will conduct school programs and assist with program set up and maintenance together with other related duties as needed.
The Part-time Education Specialist is responsible for but not limited to:
Conducting school programming; on-site and off-site
Making effective and enthusiastic public presentations
Organization and upkeep of program materials
Lift 50 lbs.
Load and unload teaching materials from vehicles
Communicate effectively, both orally and in written form
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with Science Center employees, board members, community members, and volunteers to motivate and energize them
Represent the Science Center and articulate its mission, goals, and programs
Work both independently and as a member of a larger staff team
Work a flexible schedule, which may include occasional evenings, weekends and holidays
Life Science (Animal Biology and Animal Husbandry)
Earth Science (Geology and Paleontology)
Effective communications (verbal and written) and people skills
Computer skills using Windows applications
Familiarity with Microsoft Office products such as Word, Access, Publisher and Excel
Familiarity with general office equipment and procedures
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
Valid California Driver’s License
Vehicle with Proof of Insurance: large enough vehicle to transport up to 5 program storage boxes and cart
Current Tetanus vaccination required
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degree required or equivalent knowledge and experience
Life Science and/or Earth Science background highly preferred
Working with children in an educational environment for at least one year
