We are looking for a cohort of three full-time empathy fellows to join the Community Engagement (CE) team. As members of the CE team, empathy fellows are expected to use their year at the Aquarium to gain job experience in the marine conservation field, with a focus on the role that empathy can play in both marine conservation. Fellows will work to build meaningful relationships with existing and new Connections partners. This position reports directly to the empathy fellowship coordinator.

- Work in collaboration with the team to create and deliver empathy-based outreach programming with our Connections partners, and Cedar River Salmon Journey and Beach Naturalist programs.
- Identify, research, plan and implement a personal empathy community action project (ECAP) with the intent of developing empathy toward marine life and people within the Salish Sea region.
- Participate in all workshops, professional and personal development trainings, and guest talks coordinated by the empathy fellowship coordinator.
- Meaningfully and respectfully engage community members of all ages with marine conservation activities at off-site and on-site community events.
- Work with the team to provide support for colleagues throughout the Aquarium seeking to make the Aquarium and our programs more equitable and inclusive for all.
- Active commitment to developing personal and professional development skills.
Skills, abilities and other requirements:
- Interest in marine science conservation and fostering empathy for people and animals as a conservation tool.
- Demonstrated commitment to environmental justice and desire to serve communities that are disproportionately affected by environmental degradation.
- Interest in engaging courageous conversations about diversity, equity and inclusion topics such as social, racial and environmental justice.
- Enthusiasm and skill for developing relationships with people from diverse backgrounds and building strong ties with the community.
- Fellows should self-identify from historically marginalized communities in the Salish Sea region.
Education and experience:*
Six months working or volunteering in an organization such as a school, camp, community center, zoo, aquarium, nature center or other organization engaged in education or outreach with historically marginalized communities.
Ability to communicate in a language in addition to English.
High school diploma or equivalent.
Live in the Salish Sea region.
*In lieu of traditional education and work experience, comparable life experience will be considered.
Pay and benefits:
$18/hour. Includes the Seattle Aquarium’s comprehensive benefits package: medical, vision, dental (subsidized dependent coverage also available), HRA, FSA, life insurance, long-term disability, 403b retirement fund, subsidized transit (ORCA) pass, Aquarium Family Plus membership and generous paid time off.

Our current annual budget is $20 million.
The Aquarium prioritizes health and safety for our staff and visitors, embracing science to guide our operations. Staff are required to wear face masks while working, maintain physical distancing at all times and check their temperature before starting work each day. In addition, we maintain high standards of cleanliness and all high-touch surfaces (like windows, railings, restrooms and elevators) are continuously cleaned.
We anticipate the following recruiting schedule for those candidates who are selected for consideration. The following dates are preliminary and subject to change. We will work with candidates to set interviews that work for all involved. If hired, relocation assistance is not available.
