Position Title: Environmental Education Specialist 
Reports To: Senior Director   
Location: Washington, DC Office
Date: July 2019
FLSA: Exempt

I.   Major Functions:

The Environmental Education Specialist is responsible for supporting and overseeing NAAEE’s environmental education research and evaluation programs, including serving as a staff liaison and content contributor for our research-to-practice initiatives, eeWORKS initiative, EE research database, evaluation portal, and eeLEARN modules. This position will also help support eeBLUE, NAAEE’s partnership with NOAA and the Department of Education, administering a small grants program that brings environmental education to 21st Century Community Learning Center sites. The position will also assist with a number of communication-related projects, as needed.

II. Programmatic Responsibilities:  ~70%

Manages NAAEE’s research initiatives & supports programmatic activities, including:

  1. Leading our eeWORKS initiative in partnership with Stanford University, UC Davis, and others, including assisting in planning and executing comprehensive research reviews, drafting communications materials that translate the findings of research reviews, reviewing and synthesizing research articles, and sharing and disseminating findings and materials through webinars, conference presentations, and other opportunities
  2. Serving as the staff liaison and a content contributor for our research-to-practice initiatives, including working with research partners at Stanford, Duke, UC Davis, University of Florida, and others to synthesize the results of research into communications tools for lay audiences, translating data into practical applications for practitioners, writing research summaries for our EE research library, and working with partners and advisors to advance our research agenda
  3. Working with partners on NAAEE’s evaluation portal to help build practitioners’ evaluation capacity, assisting in identifying resources and tools to populate the portal, and promoting the evaluation portal through webinars and other opportunities
  4. Administering the NOAA-21st Century Community Learning Center grants programs, including overseeing all aspects of the competition logistics, providing awardees with support and assistance as needed, and conducting evaluation planning, tool development, observational data collection, and data synthesis
III. Communication Responsibilities: ~20%

Supports program communication for NAAEE through the following methods:

  1. Working with our communication team to implement NAAEE’s communication strategy related to research, NOAA, and other programmatic responsibilities
  2. Assisting with writing and editing blogs, developing modules, updating web content, and adding innovative stories and features
IV. Special Project Responsibilities: ~10%

Performs other duties and supports special projects essential to NAAEE, including:

  1. Helping support conferences, meetings, and workshops, as needed 
  2. Assisting with communication pieces, as needed, including press releases, special announcements, the annual report, grant proposals, and other publications
V. Supervisory Responsibility:
  1. Assisting management team with overseeing interns and volunteers, as needed
VI. Working Relationships:
  1. Internal: Daily contact with NAAEE staff, members, and supporters
  2. External: Daily contact with external partners and colleagues related to all aspects of the position
VII. Minimum Skills and Experience Required:
  1. Education: Master’s degree in environmental education or similar field
  2. Experience: Must have at least 5 years of experience in environmental education, conservation, writing and communication, or some related field. Experience and/or familiarity with environmental education research and evaluation is also required, and grant management is a plus
  3. Skills and Abilities: Excellent organization and communication skills, including project management, writing, editing, and proofreading; solid understanding of environmental education research, evaluation, and practice; experience in grant and budget management, strategic thinking, and partnership and network building; must have an ability to work efficiently, with flexibility, creativity, initiative, positive energy, and good humor; ability to work independently as required but to also work effectively as a team member; ability to juggle multiple projects, meet deadlines, and exercise tact and diplomacy; position requires an individual who is culturally competent and values working with individuals representing a diversity of backgrounds and perspectives
