Job Description:

This position is based in Sylva, NC with the Balsam Mountain Trust. The mission of the Balsam Mountain Trust is the stewardship of the natural and cultural resources on Balsam Mountain Preserve and the Blue Ridge Mountain region, achieved through effective land management practices, scientific research and environmental education.

Purpose of the Position

The Education Outreach Coordinator (EOC) will develop and implement school and public programs.  In our two target counties, the vast majority of schools are designated Title 1, with many unable to afford outreach programming.  The EOC will work to expand our Adopt-a-School program, which pairs local business sponsors with local schools, so that we can deliver hands-on, live animal programs to those schools at no cost.  The EOC will also work to continue development and growth of the pollinator program initiated by our previous members. This program aims to engage the public in pollinator conservation (using monarch butterflies as a target species) through participation in hands-on activities and citizen science. Programming is currently delivered to elementary school students, local libraries, and our Hispanic community; the EOC will have the opportunity to discover new partnerships to expand the reach of this program.

The EOC will also develop and deliver public programs and/or special events that are new to the Trust. This will include development of a program that aims to reach our high school student population, potentially by way of a field biology based internship. Programs will prioritize getting members of our underserved population outdoors and developing and nurturing environmental conservation values.  New programs will depend on the skills/interest of the member and priorities of the Trust. The EOC will also be responsible for building/evolving partnerships with local community and nature based organizations.  This position is unique in that the member will be trained to handle, and even train animals (birds of prey, native reptiles and opossum).

Position Responsibilities and Duties

  • Enhance and Expand Elementary School Outreach through Adopt-a-School (AAS) Program
  • Coordinate and deliver NC standard-based, AAS outreach programming for 4th and 5th grade students; evaluate and update programs
  • Seek out and secure funding from local business sponsors for the AAS program; continue to develop business recognition package
  • Update website and Facebook with AAS pictures and news
  • Receive training on handling education animals and program delivery
  • Grow Pollinator Program
  • Coordinate and deliver pollinator program to 1st and 2nd grade students at partner schools; evaluate and update programs
  • Continue development and implementation of appropriate evaluation process to measure impact of program
  • Receive training on monarch citizen science techniques, monarch rearing/care, and program delivery
  • Develop New Program to Reach High School Students
  • Determine partners (teachers and administrators, etc.) to advise on appropriate program
  • Develop, implement and evaluate pilot program
  • Develop and Implement Community Educational Activities to Increase Awareness and Appreciation of Nature
  • Develop and implement other new events and programs for the public, with a focus on historically underserved populations
  • Market and share educational outreach programs via social media, BMT website and PSAs
  • Recruit and Manage Volunteers for Community Outreach Programs
  • Recruit, train and manage Adopt-a-School and community outreach volunteers to assist with programming and events
  • Work as a team to support the Balsam Mountain Trust mission
  • Enthusiastically promote the Preserve’s and Trust’s mission and goals to the community at large
  • Work effectively, creatively, productively and professionally with other team/staff members

Qualifications (knowledge, skills, and abilities required for the job)

  • A minimum of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university related to this position or equivalent experience; certified North Carolina Environmental Educator (or equivalent) a plus
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver fun, creative and entertaining environmental education programs for students of all ages is essential
  • Demonstrated ability to handle and care for a variety of live animals that includes, but may not be limited to: snakes, turtles, birds of prey, and an opossum (or enthusiastic willingness to learn)
  • Cursory knowledge of citizen science and enthusiasm for pollinator conservation (knowledge of native pollinators including ecology, conservation and identification are a plus)
  • Experience in event planning and business sponsorship solicitation (or enthusiastic wiliness to learn)
  • Background in volunteer coordination desired, but not essential
  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively, creatively and effectively with people of all ethnic, socio-economic, lifestyle and cultural backgrounds
  • Demonstrated computer abilities in Microsoft Office suite, especially Word, Excel, PowerPoint; webpage and social media background a plus
  • Above average level of physical fitness and ability; must have proof of current tetanus prophylaxis
  • Must be at least 18 years of age, be a citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States; Must have a legal driver’s license and consent to a criminal history check

Essential Functions

  • Leading, coordinating, and interacting with diverse individuals in outreach and office settings
  • Developing and implementing educational outreach programs for elementary school students
  • Developing and implementing educational programs and events for the general public, with a focus on underserved communities (workshops, events, outings, etc.)
  • Training, supporting, coordinating and recognizing volunteers for conservation-based volunteer opportunities
  • Using computer software and online programs for conservation-based education and outreach initiatives, including social networking, written articles and press releases
  • Handling education animals, including: raptors, snakes, turtles, and an opossum

Physical Demands

  • Above average level of physical fitness ability; must be able to keep a busy schedule, complete desk work, lift equipment, lead hikes, and be actively engaged with K-12 students and the public at large

Preferred schedule

Tuesday – Saturday, 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. (days/hours may vary depending on bookings and events)
