Job Description:

The Executive Director will be afforded a unique opportunity to create and develop new and innovative programming as Sheldrake Environmental Center reorganizes to better serve the community. The Executive Director thinks and plans strategically and inspires community members to become more engaged in the work of Sheldrake. The Executive Director hires and manages staff and ensures the appropriate utilization of volunteers. The Executive Director implements and develops policies and plans, and organizes, coordinates, and manages the programs and activities of Sheldrake. The Executive Director manages a current annual budget of $170,000 and supervises a small staff. 

  • Monthly evening board meetings are required as are occasional weekend events.                                          

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Guide the growth and development of Sheldrake’s complete range of educational programming: school, afterschool, public, scouts, camp, preschool, etc.
  • Work closely with the board of directors to define policy and direction for the organization.
  • Nurture and leverage relationships with partner organizations to maximize financial, technical, and personnel benefits for Sheldrake.
  • Hire, manage and motivate a staff of part-time and seasonal teachers.
  • Direct office staff and consultants.
  • Manage new teacher training and existing teacher enrichment, specifically to align Sheldrake’s offerings with state curriculum standards and ensure continuity between our program content and our teachers.
  • Lead strategic education initiatives such as the development of nature-based, “push-in” preschool programs, bi-lingual nature program, and middle school enrichment program.
  • Evaluate Sheldrake’s programs to ensure the highest quality experiences are being offered.
  • Prepare monthly operations and financial reports for Board meetings & Finance committee; attend monthly Executive committee meetings
  • Plan budget, liaison with accountant and insurance agent
  • Act as a liaison to schools, local community groups and public officials
  • Assist in Development Manager in marketing efforts to attract new audiences for expanded programming.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • A Master’s degree in education, environmental/science education or outdoor education preferred.
  • Experience serving as an environmental educator providing diverse programming.
  • At least two years’ experience in a leadership position of a comparable education institution.
  • Experience in program design and evaluation, teacher training, and administration.
  • Demonstrated ability in leading a staff, including hiring and evaluation.
