Forest Park Conservancy protects and fosters the ecological health of Forest Park, maintains and enhances the park's extensive trails network and inspires community appreciation and future stewardship as a gift for generations. Each year, we work with 1,000 volunteers to maintain trails, remove invasive species and plant native trees and shrubs. Forest Park Conservancy is leading a 20-year campaign to restore 15,000 acres of public and private lands to ensure the long-term health of Forest Park.
The Field Assistant, Canopy Weeds position is responsible for identifying and manually removing invasive weeds from trees that are negatively impacted by their growth, primarily on private properties in the perimeter of Forest Park.
- Identify and manually remove invasive weeds (Hedera Helix, Hedera Hibernica and Clematis Vitalba) from trees that are negatively impacted by their growth.
- Use GPS tools to ensure restoration work occurs only on properties that have agreed to and signed the "Permission to access land and treat target weeds" contract.
- Occasionally, inform the public about the goals of the Canopy Weeds program and specifics of their duties if Project Manager is not on site.
- At the end of every work day, complete the Daily Project Report form, noting properties worked on, number of trees cleared from each property, and any important information about the site (i.e. other invasive weeds present, significant garbage, dangerous terrain, noxious weeds, etc.).
Forest Park Conservancy is a small, collaborative nonprofit organization with big ideals. The Field Assistant should be flexible, helpful and a good communicator. This individual should be organized, hardworking and able to plan and think holistically in an outdoor, natural area setting.
