Job Description:

Key Responsibilities

Use suitable research-based education methods while facilitating education programming
Maintain high level of enthusiasm, curiosity, and wonder to engage guests to actively discover, question, and participate in science
Establish strong cross-departmental relationships to collaboratively develop and facilitate engaging educational experiences to provide guests with unique extraordinary opportunities
Participate in daily care, enrichment, and training of Education ambassador animal collection
Mentor Education staff and volunteers in animal care, handling, and programming
Maintain high quality professional customer service in all situations to ensure memorable positive experiences for guests at each presentation and exhibit
Take part in appropriate professional learning experiences in order to learn and use best practices in engaging guests and in animal care
Actively participate in Education Department events, meetings, and training sessions
Participate in media events and special events as needed


Key Requirements

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Environmental Sciences, Biology, Science Education or a related field
Ability to quickly learn and assimilate program materials and strategies
Passion for teaching with demonstrated ability to effectively engage with a broad audience, often in large crowds; theater, public speaking, improvisation, teaching, or interpretation experience a plus
Ability to remain calm under stress by maintaining a good sense of humor and professionalism
Comfort with handling a variety of animals including invertebrates, fish, reptiles, amphibians, small birds, and small mammals; ability to learn and follow strict animal care and programming protocols
Ability to work independently and collaboratively with other departments
Exceptional interpersonal skills along with great verbal and written communication skills
Excellent record keeping and organizational skills

Experience in using inquiry, the practices of science, best practices in environmental education, and/or scientific reasoning and argumentation preferred
Certified Interpretive Guide (CIG) or Certified Interpretive Host (CIH) status preferred


Full-time, hourly (40 hours/week); schedule will primarily be Wednesday to Sunday, but will include evenings, holidays, and special events based on the needs of the department.
