The Great Basin Institute, in cooperation with the Bureau of Land Management, Utah State Office, is recruiting one Recreation Technician to assist with sign planning, design, and implementation for the Grand Staircase-Escalante Monument (GSENM). Portal and recreation site signs using the new National Conservation Lands sign standard have been installed throughout most of the GSENM in recent years, and the Technician will continue to implement this initiative for the smaller scale, more detailed signing needs, including directional, orientation, regulatory, safety, and road signs. Specific duties of the Technician include, but may not be limited to, the following:
Inventory existing signs along high use corridors and documenting that work in a database with geo-referenced data for use with GIS and Google Earth applications;
Develop a sign plan that addresses both replacement of existing signs and the need for new/additional ones, including the detailed content for all signs using the national sign guidelines;
Graphic design of trail head and recreation site information / orientation / regulation / interpretive panels (including some content development), preparing sign orders;
Documenting lessons learned and best management practices for the sign inventory and planning initiative that can be used by other BLM-Utah field offices when undertaking similar efforts.
Part of this work will require heavy physical exertion in hot, dry conditions. Work may be required on weekends. This position will provide experience working with a BLM professional on public lands and will aid in preparation for a career in public lands recreation management.
Compensation and Timeline:
Rate of Pay: $15.00/hour

40 hours/week, six months, starting 5/14/2018 or based on availability
Location: The Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument comprises 1.9 million acres in southwestern Utah. It is the first national monument to be managed by the BLM and also the first area to be designated as part of the National Landscape Conservation System. The position would be located in Escalante, UT (a town of about 800 people) which is located along the Monument’s northern boundary.
Degree or coursework towards a degree in recreation/wilderness management, landscape architecture, natural resources planning, or equivalent field experience;
Ability to collect field data and conduct inventories using mobile devices;
Knowledge of ArcGIS software with a proven ability to create maps, as well as organize, manage, upload, and update data/databases, desired;
Experience using graphic design software (Adobe Creative Suite) to product maps, displays, brochures, and/or documents;
Familiarity safely operating 4WD vehicles on and off paved roads;
Strong written and oral communication skills and experience in providing visitor services, environmental education, outreach and/or interpretation;
Ability to read and navigate using topographic maps and a compass;
Motivated, self-starter, detail oriented, and possess good organizational skills;
Ability to camp and work in remote locations;
Ability to work alone or in small groups to accomplish the goals and mission of the BLM and GBI;
Previous work experience Southern Utah, knowledge of recreation resource and general land management issues, and understanding of the BLM mission, desired;
Ability to work in harsh and rapidly changing environments and traverse uneven terrain; and
Clean, valid, state-issued driver’s license with ability to safely operate a 4WD vehicle on paved and unpaved roads.
Successful applicant(s) must complete a Department of Interior (DOI) Background Investigation (BI) or submit paperwork to BLM human resources indicating an active and fully adjudicated BI has already been completed prior to beginning position.
