Job Description

  • Implement habitat improvement and environmental research projects throughout the preserve
  • Implement 10 year Forest Management Plan (2014-2024)
  • Work on implementing the deer management strategy, including the maintenance and monitoring of the deer exclosure
  • Develop and deliver public wildlife, natural history and environmental programs to the community, with a special focus on an adult audience
  • Provide supervision and management of the Park Maintenance Worker position
  • Implement GPS/GIS technologies to assess environmental, habitat, and land use concerns within the facility
  • Develop and implement strategies to keep invasive plant species under control
  • Develop plans, communications and public programs to address potential problems regarding animals in the surrounding community 
  • Research, implement and report on land resource management grants and assist Executive Director with funding proposals
  • Coordinate volunteer groups and projects
  • Protect native wildlife and plant life and sustain their healthy growth
  • Work with Land Stewardship Committee regarding policies, plans, projects, problems involving land management
  • Work with Gardening Committee to improve landscaped areas around the building and Native Habitat Gardens
  • Work to establish an environmental inventory, and baseline and ongoing studies of flora and fauna within the preserve
  • Partner with local universities, government institutions, and other land resource entities to conduct ecological and environmental research to further the scientific knowledge of Flat Rock’s natural resources 
  • Develop strategies to control erosion throughout the preserve
  • Maintain hiking trails year-round
  • Keep trails passable and safe; prune back hazardous branches; cut down hazardous trees; provide appropriate erosion control techniques
  • Maintain trail structures; i.e. bridges, boardwalks, signposts; woodchip appropriate trails; maintain clear blazes
  • Conduct research regarding the Nature Center’s natural resources and report findings to the community through public programs or communication tools
  • Lead interpretive walks


  • Minimum B.S. degree in parks and recreation, forestry, environmental studies, or related field, with at least three years of experience in a related position at a park or nature center setting
  • Basic carpentry skills, experience in trail maintenance and use of power tools/equipment
  • Capacity to provide leadership in developing land management plans and policies and work in collaboration with Board of Trustee committees to achieve goals
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and to supervise staff
  • Good computer skills; familiarity with GPS/GIS desirable
  • Experience in deer management and invasive species control desirable
  • Ability to work with volunteers, government entities, peer organizations, and research institutions
  • Willingness to work one weekend day and occasional evenings
