The Houston Zoo is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic team player to join our team of water quality professionals. This position is responsible for the daily operation, maintenance, and monitoring of water quality for the zoo’s various aquatic exhibits.
- Conduct inspections, preventive maintenance, and repair of LSS equipment
- Monitor water quality and chemistry of aquatic exhibits
- Understand and interpret water chemistry reports and results, and make recommendations for corrections as needed
- Ability to troubleshoot and repair all systems and equipment
- Ability to use control systems to monitor and record data
- Maintain accurate system logs and records as needed
- Recommend and maintain the stock of required spare parts, tools, and test instruments
- Interface effectively with other departments to maintain the highest quality standards
- Follow and maintain all safety policies and procedures
- Maintain the highest standard of work area cleanliness at all times
- Interact with Zoo guests and maintain the highest level of guest satisfaction
- Required to carry radio/cell phone and respond as necessary while on duty.

Reports to Manager, Water Quality
- Candidates must have a minimum of two years’ experience operating and maintaining aquatic life support systems, a municipal water treatment plant, or a waste water treatment plant.
- Must have the ability to diagnose and repair LSS equipment including but not limited to ozone generators, pumps, heat exchangers, air compressors, fractionators, UV Sterilizers, control systems, chemical injection, and filtration systems.
- Must be proficient in the use of proper testing equipment, hand tools and shop equipment.
- Must be proficient in pipe fitting utilizing PVC, copper, and polyethylene tubing.
- Must communicate effectively in English in both written and oral form.
- Strong demonstrated knowledge of water chemistry and monitoring in an aquarium environment.
- Demonstrated ability to work with various computer programs and software related to essential functions of the position.
- Attention to detail and great overall workplace cleanliness is mandatory.
- Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, marine science or a related field is a preferred. A valid Texas driver’s license is required.
- Must be able to work nights, weekends, holidays, and have a flexible schedule.
The position involves considerable physical exertion, such as regular climbing of ladders, lifting of heavy objects (up to 75 pounds) on a highly frequent basis and/or assuming awkward positions for long periods of time.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to wet or humid conditions; work near moving mechanical parts; work in high, precarious places; outdoor weather conditions and extreme heat. The employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The employee is occasionally exposed to extreme cold; risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
- Regularly lift and /or move up to 75 pounds.
- The job requires visual acuity and physical skills needed to make fine closely coordinated hand /eye movements for calibration of test equipment and life support equipment adjustments. The job duties require the applicant to regularly walk, sit, stand, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. Individuals in this role will frequently be required to climb or balance and must be able to verbally communicate during the performance of these job duties. In addition, the skills to operate equipment as an extension of the worker are required.
Requires attention to detail and a concern for public comfort through providing a clean and pleasant environment for guests, staff, and animals. Ability to extend excellent customer service attitude in public setting, when needed.
