Job Description:

Riverbend Park is opening a half day Nature Based Preschool in Fall 2021. This unique opportunity will offer a preschool teacher the opportunity to develop and implement a nature based preschool curriculum for children age 3-5. The lead teacher will work with the Naturalist/Visitor Services manager to develop and implement a new preschool.

The preschool lead will develop and implement a preschool curriculum that engages children outdoors in all weather conditions while providing developmentally appropriate curriculum, activities and learning for young children.  The preschool will be run under the direction of the Riverbend Park Naturalist/Visitor Services manager with a lead teacher, one assistant and volunteers.


  • Develop a curriculum to ensure a quality preschool program that encourages a growth mindset, nature exploration, and age-appropriate developmental activities.
  • Manage the administration of the preschool to ensure compliance with state regulations,
  • and lead staff and volunteers in implementation of the program.
  • Ensure the health, safety, and well-being of students through site surveys and daily check-ins with students.
  • Promote a close relationship with families through communication, including emails, phone calls and parent conferences.
  • Generate weekly lesson plans that focus on students’ interest.
  • Assist the VSM with the training and supervision of teaching staff and volunteers.
  • Maintain Virginia training requirements and supervise other staff in obtaining training requirements.
  • Monitor safety concerns to ensure the health and safety of children, parents, and staff.
  • Order, prepare, clean, and maintain teaching supplies.
  • Participate in long and short term planning for the preschool.


  • A degree in education or an education-related field
  • All State of Virginia requirements for a Lead Teacher
  • CPR/First Aid Certified (or the ability to become within 1 month of hire)

In addition to the qualifications required above, preferred qualifications include:

  • Experienced and comfortable taking children into nature in all weather conditions.
  • Demonstrated experience in planning and implementing outdoor programs for a preschool level audience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the natural history of the region and excellent interpretation skills.
  • Ability to organize and manage staff, volunteers and others.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others.
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently.

Work Schedule:

Position will start in May/June 2021 to help with planning and opening the preschool.
When the preschool opens, The lead preschool teacher will be responsible for leading 5 days a week preschool 9am-1:00pm with time to plan and cleanup each day.  Preschool runs Sept-May with optional summer work leading summer camps at Riverbend or other Fairfax County Parks.

Max hours/year: 1560
