Position Type: This is a full-time, salaried professional, soft-money funded position. Reappointment contingent on continued funding and satisfactory performance.
Located in the Western Maine Mountains, the University of Maine 4-H Camp and Learning Center at Bryant Pond offers year-round experiential education programming for youth and adults, including onsite day and residential school programs, in-classroom outreach, backcountry expeditions, summer camp, weekend retreats, and college and adult specialty programs.
This position provides support and leadership for the NorthStar mentoring program, which connects young people in MSAD#44 to caring adults through expeditionary learning, service-learning, community engagement, and adventure education. The NorthStar Program Coordinator will work under the direction of the NorthStar Program Director and as an integral part of the Bryant Pond 4-H Center programming team. This position requires frequent collaboration with other Bryant Pond 4-H and Cooperative Extension staff as well as schools, parents, non-profit organizations, businesses, and adult community members. The anticipated hiring salary for this soft-money-funded position is $38,701.00.
Work directly with cohort student groups (Directly serving three grade levels and assisting with overall program delivery)
● Develop and maintain caring, professional, long-term relationships with participating students and their families or guardians
● Provide consistent, active mentoring of youth, based on positive youth development best practices including an environment that is anticipatory, supportive, and encourages constructive feedback
● Direct, organize, lead, and supervise expeditions and field trips in urban settings and outdoor experiential activities on freshwater lakes, rivers, and in the backcountry
● Treat basic first aid needs of students while overseeing all aspects of risk management
● Research, design, pilot, and deliver leadership programing and community-based service-learning projects in collaboration with adult mentors and students
● Train older teen mentors to work collaboratively with students in younger cohorts
● Facilitate student groups in teambuilding and leadership activities, including high and low challenge courses and climbing wall programs
● Guide students through consensus decision-making processes during pre-trip planning meetings and while on expeditions
● Assure that pre and post-expedition paperwork is completed correctly and on time and that students attend pre-trip meetings before expeditionary programs and field trips
Act as a professional liaison to the school and area families:
● Build and develop community trust, support, and excitement for NorthStar within the school and surrounding communities
● Continually support and encourage families to remain active in NorthStar
● Answer parent or guardian questions and concerns and connect families and students to community support services with the assistance of the NorthStar Program Director
Volunteer Management and Community Engagement:
● Establish, cultivate, and leverage meaningful relationships and collaborations in the community to support continued staff and youth development opportunities with schools, non-profits, businesses, and more
● Assist the Program Director with the 4-H Volunteer Orientation and Leadership Training (VOLT) procedure, including screening and background checks, interviews, training, and management
● Report program activities and success stories to the NorthStar Program Director, Bryant Pond 4-H Center staff, the Lerner Foundation, and other stakeholders as necessary
● Contribute to marketing and fundraising efforts
● Develop and maintain professional relationships that reflect courtesy, civility, and mutual respect both internally and externally to the University of Maine
● Work collaboratively to continually evaluate and update policies and procedures around youth development, expedition procedures, and risk management
● Administer formal and informal program evaluations and comply with all Lerner Foundation grant deliverables, including creating individualized, data-driven growth plans for students
● With direction from the NorthStar Program Director, utilize and remain accountable to UMaine systems to purchase materials and supplies related to the NorthStar program
● Perform other reasonably related duties as assigned
● Bachelor’s Degree or considerable youth development experience
● Ability to travel both in and out of state, typically requiring a valid driver’s license
● Maine State Trip Leader Permit or the ability to obtain within the first six months
● Current Wilderness First Responder (or higher) or ability to acquire prior to starting date
● Demonstrated experience planning and managing backcountry multi-day expeditions (including food safety and risk management) and the ability to address the needs of all participants in varying weather conditions
● Ability to lift 50 pounds, walk/hike 5-8 miles carrying a 40+ pound backpack, or canoe over uneven terrain
● Demonstrated ability to mentor youth and volunteers to develop cohesive and effective teams while achieving strategic objectives and program goals
● Ability to implement E-Mentoring best practices and to effectively utilize online communication tools including Facebook, Google Classroom, Google Chat, Discord
● Demonstrated skills in organizational communications and marketing, including written and oral communication
● Demonstrated experience with software and social media, including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Instagram, etc.
● 3-5 years’ experience with Positive Youth Development (PYD)
● Outstanding organizational management skills required to prioritize and manage events, programs, expeditions, field trips, teen participants, and volunteer mentors
● Demonstrated ability to work independently to achieve measurable results and manage multiple tasks
The Program Coordinator position is based at the Bryant Pond 4-H campus. University of Maine business hours are Monday-Friday 8:00 am-4:30 pm. Due to the nature of this position, work beyond regular office hours will be necessary to meet the job requirements. NorthStar programs occur in local schools, on expeditions and field trips, and at the Bryant Pond 4-H Center. The work schedule is based on a 40-hour workweek, with extended hours sometimes required. The NorthStar Program Coordinator will establish regular office hours in a professional office environment and in consultation with the NorthStar Program Director.
