Member Position Summary:

The One Truckee River (OTR) Education and Outreach Coordinator, an AmeriCorps member, will be an essential member of the OTR/KTMB team while working side-by-side with Nevada Land Trust. With support from KTMB’s education office, this person will help create a youth and adult watershed education pilot program through the One Truckee River initiative. The member will organize and attend outreach events in the community that highlight the mission of One Truckee River with support from the KTMB/OTR team. Frequent weekend work may be required. The member will have the opportunity to interact with a wide range of community partners and inspire the community to learn about and love the Truckee River. This person will work to foster engagement and maintain relationships with current stakeholders and seek partnerships with new stakeholders.

Timeline for Service: September 2016 - August 2017

 

Primary Responsibilities:

Develop and maintain partnerships with Truckee River watershed stakeholders

Design opportunities for adult education and community involvement around OTR’s mission

Develop, support and publicize an art trail  (ArTrail) along the Truckee River in partnership with Washoe County and others

Facilitate and promote OTR programs and events for youth and adults

Maintain data and records relating to the OTR / KTMB programs

Share OTR/KTMB Watershed Warrior Education program for youth and adult community members

Enhance curriculum and standards alignment with Common Core and Next Generation Science Standards

 

Secondary Responsibilities:

Develop and maintain partnerships with school administrators and teachers

Work with community organizations on mission driven initiatives such as dog waste, green waste, car wash awareness

Facilitate supplementary KTMB programs and events for youth and adults

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Passionate commitment to OTR/KTMB mission and vision;

Bachelor’s degree in education, environmental science, or related field;

Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment;

Exceptional writing skills;

Outgoing personality and strong communication skills;

Flexibility, optimism and a good sense of humor

Strong organizational skills;

High degree of initiative and spirit of service;

Experience working with teachers and volunteers;

Clean Drivers Licence and reliable vehicle

Preferred: strong understanding of education standards and experience in curriculum development;

Preferred: experience with event and volunteer coordination

Preferred: experience teaching in formal or informal settings;

Preferred: experience working for environmental education centers, nature centers, and/or summer camps;

Preferred: Reading, writing and speaking competency in Spanish language.

Preferred: Social media writing experience

 

Required Academic and Experience Qualifications:

Must have a high school diploma or equivalent, or agree to earn a high school diploma or equivalent before using an educational award. It would be useful if members have a Bachelor’s degree in education, science, or a related field.

Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful (KTMB) is a private, 501 (c) (3) nonprofit dedicated to creating a cleaner, more beautiful region through education and active community involvement. For over 25 years, KTMB been dedicated to beautification of the Truckee Meadows, advocacy for a cleaner community and region, massive volunteer cleanup efforts, and education that inspires action.

 

Program Mission:

The Waste Warrior Program aims to educate K-12 students on the importance of maintaining clean and healthy environment, including our watershed and open spaces.

 

Additional Guidelines or Expectations:

AmeriCorps members are required to wear at least one piece of AmeriCorps gear (AmeriCorps button), provided by the Parks Foundation, every day during their term of service. When the member is facilitating a program, they should wear the t-shirt their site supervisor provides them with the AmeriCorps button pinned on this shirt. AmeriCorps members must participate in a minimum of three National Days of Service during their term of service and may participate in additional service projects.

 

Member Benefits:

AmeriCorps members receive a living allowance of $12,630, a $5,815 education award upon successful completion of service, healthcare, childcare coverage (for eligible members), and professional development opportunities throughout their term of service. If the member qualifies, they will also receive student loan forbearance and interest payments.  

 

Evaluation and Reporting:

Members will receive a mid-year and end-of-term performance evaluation from their site-supervisor and the AmeriCorps Program Director. Members will submit their biweekly Member Service Logs (timesheets) to their supervisor to be approved. Members are also responsible for reporting performance measures to their site supervisor and AmeriCorps Program Director every month during their term of service.
