Tasks include:

environmental science education, leading backcountry camping trips, cabin rental hospitality, and engaging the public.

Instructors are responsible for teaching old-growth forest ecology and cultural history curriculum to all educational groups including; elementary, middle, and high school classes, and university programs; youth, adult, and family workshops; volunteer and other private events. Throughout the season Instructors are responsible for hosting cabin renters; including driving gear shuttles, moving renters’ luggage, cleaning cabins, and hospitality. In the summer months Instructors lead youth in week-long backcountry camping expeditions in and around the Opal Creek Wilderness.

We have a small staff and everyone is required to help in all aspects of running a remote residential facility with a diversity of programs. We run our programs from the old mining town of Jawbone Flats, an off grid community three miles inside of the Opal Creek wilderness Area. This is a residential position, and staff will live at Jawbone Flats in housing provided by the organization.

Minimum qualification:

BS/BA, preferably in natural sciences or education, previous teaching experience, experience working in a camp setting, and backcountry camping experience. The selected candidates will have the personal qualities necessary for working within a small non-profit organization, including the ability to succeed in a dynamic and demanding environment. A Wilderness First Responder certification is required by the time of employment.

Compensation Information:


$80/day, plus housing, utilities and partial board.
