This position works closely with Alaska staff and has lead responsibility for the design and implementation of a robust public outreach program in support of Defenders of Wildlife’s conservation priorities in Alaska. The position also provides administrative support to the office and staff. While the focus is on Alaska’s lands, waters and wildlife the Alaska Outreach Coordinator will also interact with Defenders’ headquarters staff when Alaska outreach work aligns with and supports Defenders’ national conservation work.

This position also involves a wide variety of responsibilities supporting the program and operations of the Alaska Program field office. Programmatic and technical assistance will be provided to the Director and other staff members in the Alaska Program. The Alaska Outreach Coordinator must possess a general knowledge of all programs and projects within the Alaska Program to assist the Director with oversight, implementation of work plans, program budgets, grant reports and compliance with procedures and schedules. This position requires substantial discretion in determining how to meet assigned goals and competing deadlines.

Priority conservation areas include the Arctic, Izembek and Kenai National Wildlife Refuges, Arctic Ocean, Bering Strait, Cook Inlet, Gulf of Alaska, Tongass and Chugach National Forests, and other federal lands. Species of special interest include polar bears, Pacific walrus, Cook Inlet beluga whales, Northern Sea Otters, Kenai brown bears, wolverines, caribou and wolves including the Alexander Archipelago wolf.


  • Mobilize and grow the number of Defenders’ members and on-line activists in Alaska to support actions to conserve Alaska’s fish and wildlife and protect the public land habitats that sustain them.
  • Engage additional constituencies to support Defenders’ priority wildlife conservation such as outdoor recreation businesses; fish and wildlife conservation enthusiasts; private landowners; academics; local, state and federal officials and tribal and Alaska Native corporate representatives; religious, scientific and environmental organizations.
  • Collaborate and coordinate conservation actions and campaigns with Alaska staff and other environmental community outreach partners engaged on similar issues.
  • Assist Alaska Program staff in executing human-wildlife coexistence programs.      
  • Utilize Defenders’ online and social media networks, including managing our Alaska-specific platforms including the Alaska Facebook page, to help facilitate and grow Defenders’ Alaska grassroots mobilization.
  • Develop, distribute, and/or present necessary campaign materials such as talking points, factsheets, action alerts and multi-media presentations
  • Help secure letters to the editor and other earned media in local papers
  • Inform and educate our members and supporters on significant wildlife and public land management proposals, facilitating the submission of comments on such proposals to the agencies
  • Enhance the presence of public lands and wildlife supporters at state and federal hearings and public events affecting priority areas and species
  • Represent Defenders in coalitions, public meetings, hearings, press events, conferences, and in general communications with public officials, the media, members, the donor community and the public
  • Facilitate and promote the integration of diversity, equity and inclusion strategies into Defenders’ programmatic and outreach work in Alaska

Various administrative and office management duties such as: 

  • Respond to information requests from members and other interested parties and distribute Defenders’ published reports; 
  • Assist with development and tracking of the Alaska’s Program’s annual budget;
  • Copy and fax; schedule appointments; manage and distribute information; check requests, reimbursement requests, and submit in a timely manner; attend all relevant internal staff meetings; trouble-shoot problems with computers and technological and information systems and follow all other administrative procedures;
  • Perform all other related duties as assigned by supervisor and be an energetic, enthusiastic and committed advocate for all Defenders’ programs.


An equivalent combination of demonstrated education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed below:

  • Education:  Education: Bachelor’s (B.A./B.S.) degree preferred.
  • Experience: 2+ years of successful grassroots organizing in conservation, political and/or outreach campaigns in Alaska preferred.


  • Ability to learn and effectively communicate the substance of legally, scientifically and politically complex wildlife and wildland focused issue campaigns, to Defenders’ members and supporters, the general public, and media
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to form effective working relationships with diverse constituencies including hunters, local political leaders, tribal communities, and religious and scientific communities
  • Demonstrated awareness of and experience with the concerns and needs of individuals from diverse cultures, backgrounds and orientations.
  • Excellent writing skills and ability to convey effective messages to various constituencies
  • Experience using and managing social media platforms such as Facebook
  • Must be extremely well-organized, capable of juggling many different projects and tasks, maintain a high level of accuracy, and able to set priorities in consultation with other staff members 
  • Requires high level of computer literacy with advanced knowledge of Microsoft Word and willingness to learn new programs and features
  • Ability to work independently and maintain strategic issue focus and meet all work deadlines


While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use a computer and communicate with others while doing so.


  • Employee will be working in a work environment that is usually quiet.
  • Occasional field working conditions that may involve walking in various terrains.
  • This position requires travel on the southcentral road network, and potential travel to more remote areas of the state.
