The Public Engagement Specialist develops trust-based relationships with historically marginalized community members and organizations to reduce barriers and ensure the whole community can access and feel connected to natural areas. Approximately half of this position is focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts, both internally (25%) and externally (25%), and approximately half of this position is focused on delivering programs and services to traditional and new audiences (50%).
This position is responsible for coordinating diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts internally within the Natural Areas Department to foster a safe workplace culture in partnership with department and City staff. Strong project management skills including communication, public speaking, time management, organization, and adaptability are essential to this work. This position will partner with and be a resource for department staff to ensure equity is an important component of their work.
The Public Engagement Specialist is also responsible for developing, coordinating, delivering, and evaluating natural areas programs and services. Programs and services may include tours, youth clubs, interpretive media, public engagement events, one-day volunteer projects, volunteer training, virtual programming, outreach events, and more.
This position requires significant collaboration with City departments, organizations, and community members. Ability to communicate in languages other than English required, Spanish preferred.
