Organization/Agency Mission and/or Goals: 

The mission of the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is to provide safe and enjoyable recreational and interpretive opportunities for all New York State residents and visitors and to be responsible stewards of our valuable natural, historic and cultural resources.
Program Mission and/or Goals:

Bayswater Point State Park, East River State Park, Riverbank State Park, and Roberto Clemente State Park offer recreation opportunities for the public and environmental education programs for after-school groups. The Interpretive Center at Clay Pit Ponds State Park Preserve offers environmental education programs year round for schools and youth organizations at all grade levels as well as interpretive hikes and themed programs for the general public. 
Community Need:

Because of the density of development, New York City residents have limited access to open space and natural resource areas.  There is an increasing interest in accessing such resources by the general public and local schools.  New York City public schools are under increasing pressure to enhance science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) programming.
Member Position Summary:

  • Implement new programming at sites within the region.
  • State Parks in the New York City Region at large events.
  • Plan and conduct one project, to be determined within three months of the member’s start date and based upon interest, which will leave a lasting impact upon a State Park in the New York City region.
  • Other duties as assigned by management based on the facilities’ operational needs.

  • Completion of AmeriCorps reporting requirements including bi-weekly timesheets, monthly reports, pre/post tests for any education provided, evaluations at the beginning, mid-point, and end of term.  

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Member MUST:

  • Be comfortable with public speaking, working with young children, and working outside in all weather conditions.  Normal schedule is Tuesday – Saturday, but must be open and willing to working outside of this schedule. 
  • Be comfortable traveling on a daily basis.  This position requires the member to work at various Parks throughout the region.
  • Be very self-directed, motivated, and able to work independently.
  • Members must be at least 17 years of age at the commencement of service. Members must be a citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States; and must Satisfy the National Service Criminal History Check eligibility criteria pursuant to 45 CFR 2540.202.

Required Academic and Experience Qualifications:

BA in environmental education or related field.

This position requires that you become enrolled in AmeriCorps.  If you are selected for this program please be sure to accept AmeriCorps during the SCA offer process.  No travel allowance will be offered for this position even if it is stated on your confirmation of acceptance.

SCA Hudson Valley AmeriCorps partners with State and non-profit agencies to address the conservation needs of the Hudson River Watershed region. Corps members are placed at individual host sites, where service activities range from providing environmental education to underserved youth, to restoring streambanks along the Hudson River, and beyond. Members join together regularly for trainings, service projects, or other events. 

Location Description:

Six State Parks operated by NYS OPRHP in the New York City Region provide natural recreation opportunities to urban audiences. Bayswater Point State Park, East River State Park, Gantry Plaza State Park, Riverbank State Park, and Roberto Clemente State Park all have shorefront views of either Jamaica Bay, the East River, the Harlem River, or the Hudson River. Clay Pit Ponds State Park Preserve is a 265-acre forested natural area with three miles of hiking trails and 5 miles of bridle paths.

Training Provided:

Members will receive AmeriCorps orientation that includes training on prohibited and unallowable activities, an orientation that covers risk management, reporting requirements, and a benefits overview, and Wilderness First Aid and CPR training.

Professional Development Opportunities:

SCA offers all Hudson Valley Corps members Wilderness First Aid & CPR certification, Hudson River Citizen Science curricula, Trail Skills, Project WET, Project WILD and Project Learning Tree curricula. Optional trainings include Leave No Trace Outdoor Ethics, American Canoe Association Level 1 Canoe and other opportunities which may arise.

The SCA member will work very closely with the Environmental Educator and be trained on the job in normal functions.
