Job Description:

Position: Garden Coordinator at Springwater Environmental Sciences School

Direct Reporting to: Principal

Position Description

The School Garden Coordinator (full-time) works with school staff to support and implement the School Garden Program activities and curriculum. The School Garden Coordinator will collaborate with K-8th grade teachers to teach garden lessons that connect to grade-level standards per school year. The SGC will help organize events, recruit and train volunteers, and maintain the Permaculture Garden, Pollinator Garden, Rain Garden, Oak Savanna sites, and Orchard.  

Essential Functions (to include, but not limited to)

Plan and lead sustainable, organic, environmentally conscience garden activities for K-8 students. 

Partner with staff, local experts and students to research, design and develop a garden on school grounds.

Integrate environmental issues, wellness, and garden activities into school curriculum.

Develop a system for recruitment, training, coordination and tracking of volunteers.

Collaborate with classroom teachers.

Inspire and work with student to develop plans in the garden design and development.

Lead Springwater staff development and trainings in school garden.

Help plan the seasonal Harvest Party and Plant Swap, as well as community events that bring non-school members into the garden.

Pursue grants to support the growth and development of the Garden Program.

Secure donations, develop a summer maintenance plan, and host community garden work days and tours.

Maintain the Garden Program website by posting monthly updates and photos.

Assist in the design and maintenance of the school gardens and outdoor classroom space, supporting the preparation for garden work activities, planting schedule, and ensuring the care of tools.

Promote nutrition education as its relates to the garden through weekly taste-testing opportunities.

Coordinate the Springwater Green Team.

Position Requirements:

A commitment to the goals of Springwater Environmental Sciences School.

Knowledge of gardening, specifically knowledge of innovative and green practices.

Demonstrates independence, motivation and resourcefulness and enjoys serving groups of people.

Ability and willingness to serve outdoors, in inclement weather and lift up to 50 lbs.

Willingness to operate small engine tools (chainsaw, brush cutter, etc.) and harvest native materials for construction or planting projects.

Able to take the lead on development of individual learning goals, project goals, measurable outcomes, timelines and reporting.

Knowledge and ability to work with youth ages 4-15 in small and large group settings.

A cooperative manner and the ability to serve as part of a diverse team.

Desire and ability to recruit and manage volunteers.

Qualifications

  • Possession of a college degree in related field.
  • Must successfully pass a fingerprint criminal history background check.
  • Regular and reliable attendance and dependability.
  • Experiences with gardening practices and environmental issues.
  • Passion and previous experience working with permaculture practices and school gardens. 
  • At least 2 years of teaching experience with children aged 5-13.
  • Knowledge of topics including education, health and nutrition, the environment, and permaculture gardening.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations of youth and adults.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Creativity to develop lessons, events, and community engagement opportunities.
  • Ability to work independently, be flexible, and be self-directed.
  • Strong computer and project management skills.

Physical Requirements: This position required a heavy work load.  Regularly required to sit, stand up to 8 hours a day, walk, up to 10 miles a day, talk, hear, operate a computer, garden and office equipment, reach with hands and arms, and must lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.
