Roger William’s Park Zoo of Providence, Rhode Island, -one of the nation’s oldest zoos and exhibiting over 100 animal species, is currently recruiting for a full-time, year-round, School Program Specialist II. Under general direction and supervision of the Manager of School Programs, the School Programs Specialist is primarily responsible for teaching Zoomobile programs as well as out of school time curriculum and program development.

 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.      Instructor responsibilities        

·         Instruct Zoomobile programs for all ages (Toddler- Adult)

·         Facilitate out of school time programs for a variety of organizations

·         Facilitate the Aftercare programming for Zoo Camp.

·         Facilitate animal encounters for Zoo Camp.

2.      Curriculum responsibilities

·         Works with Manager of School Programs to assist with development of school program curriculum for Zoomobiles, and out of school time programs.

·         Coordinates the Pets and Vets program including organizing the schedule, booking field trips & guest speakers, and preparing instructors for facilitation.

·         Develops curriculum for the Aftercare program for Zoo Camp

3.      Animal Handling Presentation responsibilities

·         Complete Program Animal Handling Training and be comfortable with all aspects of animal handling, enrichment and presentation in programs.  This may include (but is not limited to) the safe handling of snakes and other reptiles, birds (including raptors), small mammals and invertebrates (including tarantulas, cockroaches & scorpions).

4.      Other functions and responsibilities

         Assist Manager of School Programs with operational needs, program evaluation, and training of part time & seasonal staff.

         Participate in Winter, Spring and Holiday ZooCamps as a counselor.

·         Curriculum development of various Education Department programs.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Completion of a Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Biology, Zoology, or related field from an accredited college or university; or equivalent combination of education and experience. A minimum of two years’ experience in informal education, working with volunteers, and teaching various age groups and special needs is required. Familiarity with informal education and knowledge of state standards, the Next Generation Science Standards and school curriculums is also required. Experience and comfort with animal handling strongly desired.

 

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

·         Be comfortable working outdoors and in adverse conditions (heat, rain, cold, etc.).

·         Willingness to work flexible work schedule, including occasional evenings, weekends and holidays.

·         Occasional travel via all modes of transportation.

·         Successful completion of a background check.

·         Valid state driver’s license.

·         This position also frequently requires handling moving animals, which may weigh up to 15 pounds, for thirty minute intervals.

·         Occasionally lifting and/or moving an object up to 20 pounds.
