This position supports the Nature Preserve and Natural Resources Division of Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation staff in providing environmental education programming. This position assists in providing programs for school groups, the public of all ages, and local summer campers, ages 5-15. During summer months, this position assists with the development and presentation of environmental education/ outdoor recreation activities to groups of 9-12 children. This includes developing and facilitating daily camp activities such as fishing, kayaking, stream walks, hikes, overnight camping, and field trips.
Strong leadership in education and summer camp settings is a requirement. Applicants for positions must have ability and desire to work with children in an outdoor setting and be able to work outdoors in the summer months for extended periods of time. The following skills are desired:
Strong camp leadership experience
Positive and hardworking attitude
Ability and desire to work outside in summer weather
Good group management skills
A desire to see the outdoors make a difference in the lives of youth
Ability or desire to work with amphibians, fish, reptiles, and invertebrates
Knowledge of local flora and fauna desirable
Positions run generally March-October and hours are generally 8am-5pm with some evenings and weekends. Exact start/end dates and specific hours will be discussed during the interview process. Weekly hours vary by season.
