Director of Education and Captain
Successful candidates will be physically fit, energetic, and will have an outgoing friendly demeanor. The ideal candidate will have or be working towards a post secondary degree in outdoor education, environmental education, or natural sciences. The ideal candidate should exhibit a passion for outdoor experiential education. Candidates with sailing experience, experience teaching all ages, expertise in Great Lakes ecology/environmental issues and certifications in Environmental Education (such as Project WET, Project WILD, etc.) are preferred.
Pre-employment drug screening and criminal background check mandatory.
Oversee the delivery of shipboard education programs. (S)he will work closely with the Director of Education to prepare for all on board educational programs. These include: Science under Sail, History under Sail, Legends of the Saginaw, Family Ecology, Windward Bound and more.
Specific duties include but are not limited to:
- Greeting groups for orientation before they board
- Teaching lessons on Great Lakes ecology, local history and nautical skills to all ages of youth, adults, and seniors
- Coordination of volunteer shipboard educators and programs
- Making sure all educational equipment is in good working order and organized for educational programs
- Some extended voyaging (5—10 days or more) may be required to assist with Windward Bound sail training programs.
This position is full-time, seasonal. The Shipboard Education Coordinator will be scheduled for most educational programs. When needed (s)he can be relieved by the Director of Education. On days when the ship is not underway (s)he will meet with the Director of Education preparing for upcoming programs and assisting the Director of Education with other administrative tasks critical to the educational programs. A successful candidate will have open/flexible availability and will be able to attend mandatory volunteer educator training on April 1/2 and 8/9, 2017.
This position is full-time April 1st through September 1st with some flexibility. Some availability will be necessary in March to train and prepare for our volunteer educator training.
A stipend of $345/week will be provided. Meals and overnight accommodation provided while delivering overnight programs and other travels away from homeport. Accommodation is available aboard Appledore IV or Appledore V during the sailing season with the understanding that the vessel will be regularly engaged in day and evening sails.
