Interested in Education and Sustainability? The Sonoma County Water Agency (Sonoma Water) seeks multiple educators for their Water Education Program!

Water and Energy Educator - Extra-Help
$25.51 - $31.02/Hourly*

As part of Sonoma Water's Water and Energy Education Program, you will assist with the development, implementation, and scheduling of in-person education programs focused on water conservation, climate change, watershed awareness, fisheries, water quality, wastewater treatment, storm drain pollution, and energy efficiency. Additional responsibilities include:

  • Teaching students in classrooms, virtual settings, and at outdoor field study sites
  • Supporting creek clean-up and restoration activities with students and the public
  • Ensuring program materials are stocked and refilling curriculum bins, as necessary
  • Performing light maintenance on facilities and interpretive displays

The current positions may work weekend and evening outreach events. A typical workweek may include time in the office, in various classrooms throughout the region, and in an outdoor setting leading field trips with students. 

The ideal candidates are passionate about education, the environment, and natural resources conservation; comfortable with public speaking and presenting; and are:

  • Experienced in providing environmental and natural resource education to school-age children and/or the public, including facilitating lessons and developing education programs and/or curriculum
  • Proficient in Adobe and Microsoft Office applications
  • Team players who can work independently at schools and outdoor locations
  • Able to effectively and enthusiastically work with students, teachers, and the general public
  • Bilingual Spanish or multilingual skills are desirable, but not required

Employees of Sonoma Water are employees of a special district, the Sonoma County Water Agency, and are not subject to the provisions of the Civil Service Ordinance of the County of Sonoma. 


Extra-help employees relieve or augment permanent staff. Intermittent, extra-help employees are not in the classified civil service and do not have property rights to permanently allocated positions. In addition, they do not receive most regular employee benefits such as long-term disability insurance coverage; accrual of vacation; participation in the County retirement program; or eligibility to take promotional examinations. Intermittent, extra-help employees are limited in their employment to a maximum of 1,380 hours within any twelve-month consecutive period. Extra-help employees who meet the eligibility requirements may qualify for a County contribution toward medical coverage.
