Resource Specialist / Lead Science Teacher

Duties and Responsibilities:

Pre-Program: (August 23rd – September 10th)

  • Prepare all program materials
  • Evaluate and inventory program supplies
  • Purchase supplies as needed
  • Practice curriculum activities
  • Manage your Resource team including 2 Camp Specialists
  • Finalize teaching schedule for Resource Team

During the Program: (September 11th - 15th, 18th – 22nd, 25th – 29th)

  • Sunday September 11th training times will be determined
  • Monday & Friday = 7:00 am – 4:00 pm
  • Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday = 8:00 am – 6:00 pm
  • There are three Science Resource Blocks (Hydrosphere, Biosphere, Geosphere/Atmosphere): Each Resource Specialist is assigned to lead teach one Science Resource Block, and is responsible for:
  • Managing Science Resource supplies and materials
  • Training teachers, junior leaders and other YVSS staff on your curriculum
  • Lead Teaching the Science Resource Block and Managing a team of Camp Specialists and Jr. Leaders to deliver the curriculum
  • Managing a group of 30 6th graders
  • Conducting Pre and Post Tests to the students and recording results

Post Program: (October 3rd)

  • Grading the Pre-Post Test and putting together a spreadsheet of results by school
  • Evaluating and inventorying program supplies
  • Making recommendations for 2017

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Degree or extensive experience in desired Resource (Hydrosphere, Biosphere, Atmosphere/Geosphere)
  • Extensive experience working with middle school students
  • Passion for experiential learning
  • Strong ability to coordinate large groups
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Strong Computer Skills
  • Ability to trouble shoot
  • Sound written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work in a team environment and dedicated to the time required for the program
  • Willingness to work outside in a range of weather conditions
  • Willingness to work long days/nights and extra hours
  • Ability to meet physical and work environment demands of the position
  • Ability to pass standard criminal history and background check 
  • Minimum age of 21 required for driving responsibilities
  • Clean driving record required and applicant must submit Motor Vehicle History

Camp Specialist / Assistant Science Teacher / Overnight Cabin Counselor

Duties and Responsibilities:

Pre-Program: (August – 28th – September 10th)

  • Assist with the inventory of program supplies
  • Practice curriculum activities
  • Participate in all Cabin Leader trainings
  • Sunday September 10th training times will be determined
  • Assist the Camp Coordinator with camp set up and clean up: bunk construction and overall set-up in cabins

During the Program: (September 11th - 15th, 18th – 22nd, 25th – 29th)

  • Monday & Friday = 7:00 am – 4:00 pm
  • Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday = Overnight Cabin Leader duties
  • Assist Camp Coordinator with Fireside in singing camp songs
  • Assist Resource Specialist in teaching Resource Science block: Hydrosphere, Biosphere, Geosphere/Atmosphere (will be assigned to one)
  • Assist with preparing the supplies and materials for Resource Block
  • Assist with the training of teachers, junior leaders and other YVSS staff on curriculum
  • Be an active part of a Science Resource Team in delivering the curriculum
  • Assist in managing a group of 30 6th graders and teaching small groups of 10-15 6th graders
  • Assist with conducting Pre and Post Tests to the students

Post Program: (October 3rd)

  • In conjunction with Resource Specialist evaluate and inventory program supplies
  • In conjunction with Resource Specialist make recommendations for 2018

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Experience working with middle school students
  • Education and experience in middle school science
  • Passion for experiential learning
  • Ability to coordinate large groups
