We are seeking to fill four AmeriCorps community service positions to start in September 2017 for a 10.5-month term of service.
Mission: The YMCA Earth Service Corps (YESC) empowers young people to be effective, global citizens by providing opportunities for environmental education and action, leadership development and cultural competency.
Job Description: Program Instructors will deliver environmental education, leadership development, cross-cultural awareness and service learning programming to middle and high schools in the Greater Seattle Area. Each member will serve 5-6 schools through extracurricular, school-based environmental clubs that engage, educate, and empower youth to address the environmental issues in their community. Program Instructors role model positive leadership and an ethic of service that instills confidence, inspires young people, and fosters a spirit of stewardship and conservation in teens.
Each Program Instructor is responsible for coordinating club-based programming, designing and implementing curriculum and supporting service-learning projects. In addition to club-based opportunities, Program Instructors facilitate leadership retreats for students, plan regional service events that bring together youth from across the area, and lead outdoor activities such as hiking and kayaking. Program Instructors will also collaborate with fellow team members to plan two conferences including a winter Environmental Leaders Summit and spring Environmental Symposium.
Members will be based at our offices at the Cascade People’s Center in Seattle while spending time each day at schools throughout the Puget Sound.
This position will require occasional outdoor, physical work in all weather conditions. Some evening and weekend hours will be required. This position may require a vehicle.
The YESC model strives to adapt to the needs of the young people we serve and requires enthusiasm, passion, flexibility, and a willingness to learn.
