Spring Bird Hike at Turnbull Creek Educational State Forest

Learning

Date and Time:

Friday, April 17, 2020, 8:00am

Registration Deadline:

Wednesday, April 8, 2020, 5:00pm

Come join the NC Wildlife Resources Commission and the NC Forest Service as we discover a variety of bird species along the Turnbull Creek Educational State Forest trails. Spring brings budding trees, warmer days, and more animated bird activity. Some species have already started their journeys to their mating grounds, while our resident birds and others migrating in are feeling a surge of hormones. We will observe the change in behavior as birds begin practicing their mating songs, fine-tuning dances or movements that are meant to attract females, pairing up, and preparing to build nests. We will also watch woodpeckers and nuthatches excavating new breeding cavities.

We will be on the lookout for the red-cockaded woodpecker and will explore the conservation challenges that face resident birds and migrants alike. Hands-on field experience will improve your birding skills as we learn i.d. tricks and behavioral cues together. All levels of experience are welcome! This workshop will be entirely outdoors and we will still bird in a drizzle. Please wear closed-toed comfortable shoes, bring water and bug spray, as well as some sort of sun protection. Binoculars and field guides are encouraged and there will be a few pairs of binoculars participants can borrow. Feel free to bring a bagged lunch as we will end our hike at the picnic area.
