The Science & Research Director will build on the Hurricane Island Center for Science and Leadership’s dynamic role as a critical research and education institution in Penobscot Bay and the Gulf of Maine. This position oversees Research operations and supervises a staff consisting of year-round scientists, seasonal research assistants and interns.
The Island Operations Director is a year round position managing island operations, including overseeing island facilities, sustainable systems, fleet, supervision of staff, and providing customer service to island visitors. The purpose of the Island Operations Director position is to ensure island operations run smoothly and safely by directly overseeing the facilities, galley, and waterfront (captains and multiple motor vessels) staff.

The interns work closely with the Director of Education, Education Manager, and their mentor Educator to help implement delivery of Hurricane Island’s hands-on, experiential science and leadership education programs. Interns will be supported to take on increasing responsibility and ownership of program delivery over the course of the internship and will be mentored in this process by an experienced Educator and the Director of Education.
The Garden Educator supports daily operations on Hurricane Island and is integral to the goal of creating sustainable food system practices and engaging in our educational programming.
Educators will work closely with the Director of Education and the Education Manager to implement delivery of Hurricane Island’s hands-on, experiential science education and leadership programs to (primarily) middle and high school students attending the various programs on Hurricane Island. Educators will mentor an undergraduate Education Intern, working as a team with school groups, visiting programs, and open enrollment summer programs.
The Director of Education & Programs is responsible for developing innovative programs to reach students with Hurricane Island’s mission of integrating science education, research and leadership. The position works with schools and other programs to deliver student programming that inspires the next generation of scientifically literate community leaders who take action for a healthy environment and economy.
Educators at the Hurricane Island Center for Science and Leadership implement delivery of Hurricane Island’s hands-on, experiential science education and leadership programs to (primarily) middle and high school students attending the various programs on Hurricane Island. The Summer Educator will work exclusively with visiting programs (e.g., Overland Summers) while the Operating Season Educators will work with school groups, visiting programs, and open enrollment summer programs.
The Research Assistant at the Hurricane Island Center for Science and Leadership works closely with others to implement Hurricane Island’s research program around sustainable aquaculture practices, including data collection and project management. The majority of the RA’s work takes place on our 3.2 acre aquaculture site on Hurricane Island, Maine, where we grow scallops and kelp, with some mainland based travel to conduct research. If interested, the RA is welcome to develop their own independent research project.
