Toward a Simple Rule for Evaluating Apps
This article explores the question of how we might evaluate apps in terms of their potential to promote environmental engagement in children. It recommends a specific rule for doing so: Apps that point beyond themselves, out into the world, can be meaningful tools for promoting environmental education; those apps that only refer back to themselves and other digital content do not serve this purpose well. Finally, the article applies this rule to some of the current apps out there, rejecting immersive ones in favor of ones that include elements such as the smart phone's digital camera or ability to provide GPS coordinates.
