California's Education and the Environment Initiative (EEI) curriculum uses the environment as a context to help students learn science and history-social science. The EEI curriculum is a model for educators to demonstrate how to integrate environmental literacy into classroom instruction.

"Active Voices: Civil Society and the Environment" is a high school unit that examines how people have influenced governmental issues in ways other than voting. It explores the roots of the United Farm Workers of America and analyzes how workers organized to demand protections from environmental hazards. Students learn about advocacy, environmental management, and how social, economic, political and environmental factors influence decision-making processes.
