Position Description:

Fernbrook Farms Environmental Education Center located in Chesterfield, NJ, is seeking a Director of School Programs to lead, promote, and teach our field trips, unit of study, and Urban Youth Initiative.  Successful candidates will be highly motivated, organized, great with teaching a large range of ages, and a team player.  Candidates should be knowledgeable about our varied ecosystems as well as comfortable working around farm animals including chickens, goats, and sheep.  The Director of School Programs will also be responsible for assisting all our farm-based education programs including summer camp, homeschool classes, after-school programs, events, tours, and family programs.

Responsibilities:

  • Promote field trips through a variety of mediums
  • Communicate with schools the details of the field trip/unit of study
  • Hire and train staff to teach the field trip
  • Organize, lead, and teach on the day of a field trip
  • Teach classroom lessons during unit of study
  • Develop new programming
  • Further develop and grow the field trip/unit of study engagement
  • Identify, write, and manage grant, corporate, and other funding for the Urban Youth Initiative
  • Assist with summer camp
  • Assist with events, fundraisers, and other activities related to the education center
  • Assist other programs when needed

Qualifications:

  • College degree in environmental education, environmental science, or related field
  • Experience working with students/campers in an outdoor/indoor environment
  • The ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Experience with farm or garden work
  • The ability to work both independently and as a team
  • Respectful, clear and patient interpersonal communication skill set
  • Comfortable with public speaking and networking
  • Professional character that is consistent, capable, self-directed and well organized
  • The ability to maintain composure in a changing environment
  • The ability to commit to and promote Fernbrook Farms’ mission, goals, and priorities
