Interns play an integral role in helping SERC staff to conduct educational programs and engage with the public. Spring interns will work with school groups K-8 conducting educational programs, Monday-Friday.
All interns will go through an orientation session related to educational content, safety, and logistics. They will also be provided training in emergency procedures. Interns will also be mentored in teaching pedagogy and group management techniques. Each intern will be instructed on procedures within the Education Department and be assessed on their ability to work as a team member, demonstrate program leadership, and acquire skills in understanding and interpreting SERC research. An intern must be willing to work in a variety of outdoor conditions and weather, as well as in and on the water, and lifting up to 40 lbs. All SERC interns will have opportunities to participate in SERC-wide programs for career development, lectures, and field trips to other Smithsonian units.
