Conestee Nature Preserve is a non-profit located in Greenville, South Carolina. Come and be a part of a small but mighty education team! Salary is commensurate with local public schools and dependent on experience. Paid vacation and heath insurance included.
Environmental Educator - full time staff
We are a 640-acre, nonprofit owned and operated Wildlife Sanctuary located just five miles south of downtown Greenville. We are an accessible oasis of natural beauty within the most developed section of Greenville County. Today, CNP includes over 13 miles of trails and boardwalks, 11 wildlife observation decks, and 40 self-guided learning stations. The Preserve is maintained and operated by our nonprofit staff, which includes seven full-time employees.
CNP is remarkable in its versatility. Our property’s combination of environmental, educational, recreational, and historical value is unmatched in the area. Indeed, the Preserve has the incredibly rare distinction of having been recognized both as an Important Bird Area of Global Significance and as a listed property on the National Register of Historic Places. The unique versatility and accessibility of the Preserve inspires a myriad of activities, including birding, biking, hiking, learning, wildlife watching, and photography.
About the role:
We offer a variety of well-established environmental education programs for pre-k through high-school-aged students, including field trips, summer camp, after-school courses, and other special programs. The Preserve itself is our “classroom” for these offerings, with all instruction taking place outdoors in nature. In a typical year, our education program serves more than 4,000 students, as well as hundreds of adults. This position will allow us to further expand that capacity.
The primary instructional responsibility of this educator will be offering field trips at the Preserve. Our field trips focus on inquiry-based education and provide the opportunity for students to explore their surroundings and discover more about the world around them. All programs are grade-specific and tailored to meet the SC standards. In addition to these offerings for students and school groups, the educator will also be involved in developing and administering fun outdoor learning programs for all ages, with topics that vary widely. These offerings are held intermittently and allow for an educator to showcase his or her specific interests and skills. Finally, this educator will be involved in developing and leading activities during several weeks of summer camp for middle school students.
Among our staff, we presently have one part-time and two full-time educators. This educator will work alongside existing staff, from our office at the Preserve. Our hours are generally 8am-4pm, Monday through Friday, with reasonable flexibility to accommodate personal circumstances. Hours spent by our education staff in direct instruction vary seasonally and with weather. As with all other employees of our small nonprofit, this educator will use “downtime” to perform tasks contributing to the general operation of our organization.
- Four-year college degree in education or science-related program.
- A passion for nature, education, and childhood learning.
- Suitable knowledge of science/nature and natural processes.
- Ability to manage groups of up to 25 students in an outdoor setting.
- Ability to maintain a fun and safe learning environment at all times, as well as being creative, adaptable, & flexible while managing children in a variety of situations.
- Willingness to work outside in all weather conditions.
- Willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends.
- Ability to walk up to 3 miles per day.
