Environmental Educator, Part-time
The Ecology Center seeks a motivated and inquisitive educator to lead educational activities at regional schools and Ann Arbor’s recycling facility, for a variety of audiences, ages preschool through adult. This is a part-time position at 15 to 30 hours per week. Work will be based out of the Ecology Center’s main office in Ann Arbor, however a significant portion of time will be spent off-site visiting local schools.



Founded in 1970, the Ecology Center works to develop innovative solutions for healthy people and a healthy planet. In recent years, the Ecology Center developed the country’s leading product testing service for toxic chemicals; created a statewide Health Leaders Fellowship program; and led successful advocacy campaigns to expand transit service in southeast Michigan.  The Ecology Center is the parent organization of Recycle Ann Arbor, founded in 1977, which works to build zero waste communities through convenient and innovative services. The Ecology Center has offices in Ann Arbor and Detroit.


Duties and Responsibilities

The Environmental Educator will utilize a range of skills to educate and engage learners about environmental issues. Programs focus on topics such as: recycling, composting, sustainable living, environmental health, alternative energy, and green materials. Specific duties will include:


Leading Educational Programs

Deliver established, age-appropriate classroom workshops in Ann Arbor and regional schools (ages preschool through high school)
Participate in delivering educational activity stations during family night events at area schools



Prepare education materials and clean and stock them after use in the classroom

Assist in hosting information tables with kid-friendly activities at events and conferences

Attend weekly Education Team meetings
Track activities in the classroom for reporting purposes


Reports to: The Environmental Education Director


Minimum Qualifications

Seeking an opportunity to gain teaching experience with learners of all ages
Willingness to learn and adapt
Responsible, reliable, and ability to work independently and as part of a team
Comfortable engaging an audience of all ages
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Minimum Bachelor’s degree in education, environmental science, or related field
Drivers license in good standing and access to reliable transportation
Pass a basic background check


Hours and Compensation

This is a part-time hourly position without benefits, 15-30 hours per week. Number of hours may vary slightly week to week. Most work will be weekdays between the hours of 8am and 3pm, with occasional evening or Saturday hours. The office culture is upbeat, collaborative, and goal-oriented.
