About the Fellowship
The JOFEE Fellowship seeks to invigorate the Jewish educational landscape by seeding Jewish communities with a cadre of outstanding Jewish Outdoor, Food, and Environmental Educators.
The core of our year-long fellowship and certification program is built around professional placements at host institutions around the country. Fellows also receive intensive training, mentorship, and support from leading educators and other professionals in the JOFEE field.
The JOFEE Fellowship is supported by the Jim Joseph Foundation and administered by Hazon in conjunction with Pearlstone Center, Urban Adamah, and Wilderness Torah.

JOFEE Fellows contribute approximately ten months of direct work in their professional placements (taking into consideration the initial training seminar, mid-year seminar, and closing seminar, as well as time off during the year). Fellows are placed around the country at either an existing JOFEE organization or at a Jewish communal institution.
Fellows are expected to develop, manage, and implement programming during their placement that delivers appropriate depth and breadth across the JOFEE spectrum. For some Fellows, this may consist of one or two major events or programs, whose development, logistical coordination, and implementation consume a significant portion of their placement, with a few smaller programs to round out the year. For others, this may consist of multiple, smaller-scale series of diverse programs implemented throughout the year.
Specific projects, programs, and responsibilities are determined in consultation with host institutions/organizations and the JOFEE Fellowship Director. Prospective Fellows’ experience, qualifications, and goals will be matched with host site priorities and program plans during the interview and matching process.
Eligible JOFEE Fellowship candidates have strong interest in furthering their training and professional development in the JOFEE field, and knowledge and experience working in at least one, but ideally a combination, of the following areas:
- Jewish education and/or Judaic studies
- Pedagogy/curriculum development and facilitation experience in experiential, place-based, and/or informal education
- Outdoor, food, and/or environment education
- Candidates should also possess the following qualifications:
- Professional work experience in a JOFEE setting;
- and/or successful completion of one or more immersive JOFEE experiences;
- and/or professional experience in a closely related field, such as Jewish education or (non-Jewish) outdoor, food, or environmental education, with the desire to obtain JOFEE-specific skills and experience;
- Experience working in communities composed of diverse backgrounds, ages, religious observance levels, and interests;
- Between the ages of 22-32 at the start of the Fellowship year;
- Ability to navigate complex structures within Jewish communities and effectively engage community members and leaders in JOFEE programming;
- Undergraduate degree or comparable professional experience in a JOFEE-related field or program of study; and/or Masters degree or other advanced program of study in Jewish education, Jewish communal studies, or other fields closely related to the JOFEE sphere;
- Burning desire to strengthen Jewish connections to the outdoors, food, and the environment, complemented by the organizational skills, gumption, and tenacity to develop and implement a variety of JOFEE programming

Compensation & Benefits
Living Stipend, Benefits & Travel
JOFEE Fellows are full-time employees of their host institution, who administer a minimum salary of $25,000 for the year, as well as employee benefits and health insurance. Specific allocation of work schedules, vacation, and sick leave will be determined according to host institutions’ policies and procedures.
Fellows also receive tuition-free certification training. All program and travel costs for seminars are covered by Hazon.
Mentorship & Professional Development
JOFEE Fellows are matched with a mentor from the JOFEE professional network to complement support and supervision from their host institution. Together with their mentors, Fellows identify areas for growth through the fellowship year and provide documentation of this process for the purposes of JOFEE certification.
Mentors also support Fellows in curriculum development, submitted regularly throughout the year; and final presentations, presented at the concluding Fellowship seminar.
Bimonthly webinars augment the immersive training seminars. Webinars are led by JOFEE Fellowship staff and other professionals from the JOFEE network, and cover key JOFEE and professional development topics as well as other areas identified by JOFEE Fellows for additional training.
Fellows are also supported by JOFEE Fellowship staff, with additional assistance and support for curriculum and program development with other Hazon staff and the JOFEE professional network at large.
