Job Description:

The Kerlin Internship provides emerging professionals with in-depth training and experience as educators in an outdoor, non-traditional setting. The intern works collaboratively with senior education staff to plan and deliver hands-on programs that inspire students to make curricular connections through active engagement with the natural world. Wave Hill's school programs explore science, social studies and art, and are taught mostly outdoors in our gardens and woodlands.

Responsibilities:
After an intensive two-week training period in Wave Hill curriculum and inquiry-based methods, the Kerlin Intern is expected to lead programs solo and together with an educator. Intern responsibilities include:

  • Researching and mastering lesson content
  • Preparing for programs, including program set-up and take-down
  • Leading guided programs for Pre-K to middle school groups 
  • Working with teachers to tailor programs to the needs of their classes 
  • Managing teaching materials 
  • Conducting programmatic and audience research for the department 
  • Other duties as assigned 

Qualifications:

  • B. S./B. A. required; current Masters students or recent graduates in museum studies or environmental education preferred
  • Experience teaching elementary school-aged children in a non-formal setting   
  • Demonstrable interest in life science, nature and/or art 
  • Clear, effective communication skills 
  • Flexible, team player
  • Fluency in Spanish a plus

Hours:
This is a semester-long, 14-week position that begins in early March and ends mid-June, from 9AM to 1PM three days a week, excluding Mondays.

Salary:
The rate of pay is $14 per hour for approximately 12 hours a week.
