Job Description:


The ranger positions serve as one of the primary public contacts for overnight and day users. This position is responsible for a wide variety of duties, including:

  • Answering visitor questions regarding park history, geology, plants and animals, and conducting nature walks, interpretive and environmental awareness programs for park visitors, school groups, and organizations.
  • Informing visitors of pertinent regulations of the Department as well as partner organizations such as the Department of Fish and Game and the Department of Lands.
  • Collecting fees, making reservations and operating visitor centers.
  • This is a lead position for maintaining park facilities and grounds to ensure resource preservation and visitor safety and performing a variety of basic craft activities including carpentry, plumbing, and electrical.
  • Operating and repairing vehicles, trucks, mowers, groomers, backhoes, and hand and power tools.
  • Hiring, training, scheduling and supervising seasonal employees and volunteers.
  • Preparing and maintaining reports, records, logs, and inventories.
  • Preparing research reports and procedure manuals.  


  • Knowledge of outdoor recreation and natural resource management. This can typically be met by successful completion of at least 9 college-level credits in a natural resource field AND at least 2 seasons experience working with natural resource issues.
  • Experience providing service to a variety of customers.  This can typically be gained by 6 months of experience answering questions, providing direction, and asking questions to determine needs or purpose of the visit. (Experience working in a visitor center, as a hotel desk clerk or as a sales clerk could qualify.)
  • Experience supervising staff.  This can typically be gained by at least 6 months’ work experience assigning work or training new or existing staff. Experience supervising seasonal and/or volunteer staff will qualify.


This position functions as compliance enforcement officer who maintains the peace and enforces rules within state parks.  Compliance enforcement training generally occurs within the first 18 to 24 months of employment.  Certification as a compliance enforcement officer requires successful passage of established professional requirements and a criminal background check including fingerprinting and completion of a personal history statement.


The following experience is not required for this position but may increase your score.

  • Some knowledge of Interpretation/Environmental Education.  This can typically be gained by successful completion of at least 1-college courses OR 1 agency-sponsored workshop that included park interpretation or environmental education.
  • Experience operating and maintaining vehicles/equipment.  This can be typically gained by experience operating lightweight over-the-road type vehicles and equipment such as cars and pickups (manual shift not automatic), lawnmowers, weed eaters, trimmers, etc AND experience performing preventative maintenance on small engines, pumps, and vehicles and ensuring oil and filters are changed and tune-ups are performed as required.
  • Experience performing basic construction and building maintenance. This can be typically met by experience performing basic carpentry and plumbing tasks such as roof repair, erecting dry wall, installing windows or doors, home repair and remodeling, repairing/replacing faucets, sinks, drains, and toilets.
