About Native Americans in Philanthropy
Native Americans in Philanthropy envisions a future with healthy and sustainable Native communities supported by responsive philanthropy. Our mission is to promote equitable and effective philanthropy in Native communities. We do this by increasing engagement and funding to Native-led organizations; increasing and supporting Native professionals in philanthropy; and transforming and influencing the philanthropic sector to be in alignment with an Indigenous worldview.
About the Position
The Program Manager (PM) of Tribal Nations Initiatives works closely with the VP of Tribal Nations Engagement to advance Native Americans in Philanthropy’s (NAP) engagement with Tribal Nations. The PM will help plan and launch new program initiatives focused on supporting Tribal Nations and Native American communities. This new initiative will develop capacity and raise awareness for Tribal Nations to strengthen their own philanthropic impact, while building their voice and power in the broader philanthropic sector. In this role, the PM will be responsible for initiative planning, development, and implementation with the VP of Tribal Nations Engagement. In addition, the PM will coordinate external relations with members, funders, and other stakeholders to advance NAP’s vision to support Tribal Nations.
- Works closely with VP or Director, other project managers, assigned team members, and other stakeholders to plan and develop scope, deliverables, required resources, work plan, budget, and timing for new initiatives.
- Manage program and project teams as well as coordinate and delegate cross-project initiatives.
- Develop and manage budget for projects and be accountable for delivering against established program goals/objectives.
- Strategize, implement, and maintain program initiatives that adhere to organizational objectives.
- Develop program assessment protocols for evaluation and improvement.
- Maintain organizational standards of satisfaction, quality, and performance.
- Assist with developing a strategy and project design for new Tribal Nations programs at NAP to support capacity building for Tribal Nations.
- Identify opportunities for resource development.
- Demonstrate pragmatism in moving large issues into specific program delivery mechanisms.
- Provide logistical support and implementation of Tribal Nation initiatives outreach, including a first-phase national listening tour with tribal leaders and communities.
- Create and streamline processes, oversight, and evaluation processes to allow more attention to be spent on impact and relationships, while continuing to provide strong stewardship of resources.
- Provide oversight of Tribal Nations Programs and Initiatives as designated by the VP or Director.
- Develop strengths of individual team members and build effective, values-based teams.
- Generate innovation, engagement, and ownership by listening to stakeholders and reflecting their thinking in solutions and practices.
External Relations, Engagement, and Relationship-building
- Represent NAP in speaking roles, conferences, and other events.
- Coordinate external relations with members, funders and other stakeholders to advance the Tribal Nations Initiatives.
- In collaboration with NAP team members, build and manage relationships with local, regional, and national organizations.
- Working with program leadership and the communications team, identify other communications opportunities to raise NAP’s profile in the media and online, especially in networks of tribal leaders. Identify opportunities to lift up stories about tribal philanthropy.
Fundraising and Development
- In coordination with the VP of TNE and development team, build relationships with new and existing funders for NAP’s work.
- Working with the communications and development team, identify and manage opportunities to engage our network of funders around the work being led by the VP of TNE.
- Support NAP leadership team and development staff in drafting funding proposals and reports.
Qualifications of the Ideal Candidate

Knowledge, Experience & Ability
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field required or at least 5 years of experience in a similar role. Advanced degree preferred.
- Deep knowledge, relationships, and understandings of tribal communities and nonprofits.
- Experience and/or understanding of the philanthropic sector and relationships with philanthropic professionals, funders, and organizations.
- Knowledge of philanthropic work in Native communities and how to reach additional communities amid the dominant structures of power and influence in the sector.
- Fundraising experience.
- Strong interpersonal and communications skills with proven ability to build collaborative relationships, trust, and operate in a team environment, as well as cultivating relationships with tribal leaders and tribal government philanthropic enterprise.
- Demonstrated leadership experience in a nonprofit, philanthropic, or other mission-driven organizational setting that leverages relationships across the philanthropic, private, and public sectors with local and community stakeholders.
- Ability to work with networks and smaller advisory teams to build consensus and create shared agendas for meetings and advocacy work.
- Analyze, evaluate, and overcome program risks, and produce program reports for management and stakeholders.
- Proven ability to think strategically; demonstrated record of success working with a diverse constituency of partners and stakeholders to achieve specific programmatic outcomes.
- Collaborative, positive, and able to navigate well with ambiguity and change; adept at building collegial relationships and able to respond to issues with clarity and diplomacy; demonstrated ability to inspire and foster trust and confidence in staff, management, and their colleagues.
- Resourcefulness—the ability to leverage networks and experience to find answers, solve problems, and identify new opportunities for impact.
- Strong working knowledge of CRM software, such as SalesForce
- Working knowledge of digital marketing
