POSITION:           Program Specialist-Outdoor                       

RESPONSIBLE/REPORTS TO:         Coordinator, Texas Outdoor Education Center

POSITION LAST UPDATED:            October 2016

Bachelor's degree in education, forestry, outdoor recreation, wildlife management, environmental science, or related fields is preferred. Degree may be substituted by a combination of college hours and two to four years of job related experience.

Current CPR and First Aid certifications



Facilitate and assist in the continuous assessment of age and ability appropriate nature/environmental program that utilizes the site’s natural environment.

Implement a variety of age and ability appropriate activities in outdoor study areas, such as: fossils, archery, orienteering, birds, leadership, animal habitats, trees, grasses, outdoor cooking, insects, and additional studies as developed.

Assist and participate in staff trainings for nature/environmental program.

Participate as a member of the to deliver evening programs, overnights, and special events.

Participate as facilitator for Retreats and Rentals events as needed.

Other duties as assigned


Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid and other hazards. Must be able to assist participants in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of participants.

Ability to communicate and work with groups participating (age and skill levels) and provide necessary instruction to participants.

Ability to live in camp setting and work irregular hours while delivering programs.

Ability to work in various environmental conditions.

Ability to observe behavior, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques.

Ability to lift 50 pounds.



Reports directly to Coordinator: Texas Outdoor Education Center.

Works closely with all Camp El Tesoro staff.



This position is responsible for the quality of the following program(s):

Texas Outdoor Education Center

Retreats and Rentals

Key Area of Responsibility                                                                                          Outdoor Programs         

Facilitate program components.

Ensure participants know and follow safety and educational procedures.

Maintain the outdoor equipment including storage areas, facility areas, books, brochures, materials and supplies.

Observe hazards or developments in the natural environment and alert appropriate staff.

Assist in developing and implement schedules and records for all program facilities, including but not limited to participant, group program, and activity schedules.

Other duties as assigned.

Participate as a member of the Outdoor staff to deliver evening programs, special events, overnights, and other Outdoor activities and functions.
