Job Description:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Under the supervision of the Managing Director for Program Services, the Program Officer will be responsible for the following:

Developing, executing and assessing an integrated grant making strategy that is aligned with NEEF’s organizational priorities. Review, track, and analyze grant impact and value-added to determine progress in meeting the organization’s objectives.

Ensuring that NEEF’s grant making processes meet legal, audit and internal accounting requirements.

Providing programmatic and regulatory management of grant making process including creation of request for proposals, application templates, scoring rubrics and evaluative criteria, grant agreements, and related documents. Manage reviewer recruitment and training, formulate grant recommendations for consideration and approval, creation of grantee agreements, awarding of grants, reporting and related duties.

Maintain oversight over NEEF’s web-based grants management system (GMS) and act as liaison between the NEEF and the GMS service provider.

Designing, implementing and helping to evaluate non-cash capacity-building programs for NEEF grantees.

Collaborating with other staff to market the grants program, communicate stories about NEEF’s grantees and to promote local and national awareness about NEEF’s grants program and the work of its grantees.

Manage and monitor grantee performance and compliance through effective relationship management.

Develop and maintain a quality assurance process for internal and external grant making stakeholders (i.e. grantees, evaluators, etc.).

Collect, analyze and report on the status of NEEF’s grant making throughout the year and contribute, as necessary, to the financial accounting of the organization by developing accurate and timely grantee data/reports, maintaining multi-year payment schedules and monitoring grant fund balances.

Work closely with program, communications, fundraising and administration staff.

Conduct research that is critical to refining the development of grant making areas and provide recommendations for grant making strategy. Stay abreast of trends in philanthropy and where appropriate, use research to help guide individual and collective thinking around grant making.

Respond to internal and external inquiries about NEEF’s grant making. Evaluate and produce written responses to applicant and constituent inquiries.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate will have:

A Bachelor’s degree.

3-5 years of professional work experience in philanthropy/grant making preferably with federal funds. Background in an environmentally related field preferred but not required. Proven analytical, accounting/financial and reporting skills.

Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills. This includes sound judgment in communicating professionally and knowledge of formal business correspondence, such as composing a business letter. Strong ability to clearly and professionally communicate with different audiences.

Experience with Foundant Technologies desired but not required. Computer proficiency of Microsoft Word, Excel, Access or other database, PowerPoint and Outlook programs.Proficiency in learning and mastering new software programs a plus.

Strong attention to detail, effective organizational and time management skills and ability to multi-task.

Ability to handle sensitive matters with discretion.

Flexible, self-motivated, proactive, and reliable as a leader and as part of a team.

Knowledge of grant making and monitoring required.

A working of environmental education preferred.

Moderate to advance database management knowledge.
