Job Description:

The City of Berkeley is currently accepting applications for Recreation Coordinator in the Recreation Division of our Parks, Recreation and Waterfront Department! This division provides a variety of unique and traditional recreational opportunities for all Berkeley citizens with a concentration on youth. The division administers its programs in City parks and facilities and operates the City's recreation and environmental education centers, swimming pools, skate park, and resident camps (Berkeley Tuolumne Camp, and Echo Lake Camp).

The Recreation Coordinators direct major recreation activities at a City recreation center or through City wide or City sponsored programs including: Summer Camps, Afterschool Programs, Therapeutic Recreation, Teens, Youth and Adult Sports, Special Events, Tots and Pre-K, Volunteer Services, and Environmental Education. Recreation Coordinators are responsible for the day to day coordination and comprehensive supervision of City recreation programs and facilities. Typical duties include: Activity/program planning, budgeting and implementation, and supervision of a para professional recreation staff.

The current opening is responsible for managing the Shorebird Park Nature Center, managing the Environmental Education Classroom and managing the Adventure Playground. Incumbents also develop and implement interpretive programs featuring the natural history and ecology of the San Francisco Bay Area.

Required Qualifications: 

Equivalent to graduation from high school


Four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in recreation program planning and coordination which has included facility management, which included one (1) year of lead level experience.
Supervisory or program management experience is desirable. College level coursework in recreation, physical education or a closely related
field may be substituted for the experience outlined above on a year for year basis.
