Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge in South Texas

September 2016 through June 2017

Enjoy coastal south Texas – beach, sea turtles, fishing, dolphins, kayaking, hunting and birds – while gaining experience at Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge.  The Lower Rio Grande Valley attracts birders and visitors from across the country and around the world.   We are seeking an intern with strong people and organizational skills and general wildlife biology/ecology knowledge to assist with our visitor services program.  Intern will participate in community outreach events;  greet and orient visitors at the visitor center, conduct interpretive programs and tours (including kayak tours), operate a cash register to sell entrance permits and nature store items, operate the hunter game check station, conduct educational programs and develop materials, answer phones and maintain Refuge trails, buildings and grounds. 


Public speaking skills and experience teaching or working with all ages including children. Ability to work positively with people from many different cultural backgrounds. Must be able to work in hot/humid conditions, and lift 80 lbs.  Strong birding skills and cash handling experience preferred. Willingness to work with harvested game animals including white tailed deer, nilgai antelope and feral hogs. You must have your own dependable vehicle and valid driver’s license.  Preference given to candidates with a BS degree or higher in a related field.

Work Conditions

Day conditions can involve high temperatures (90-100°F), humidity, and intense sunlight in remote areas as well as thorns, chiggers, and ticks.  Interns will normally work 40 hours per week, with extended hours during hunt seasons.  Work schedule will include weekends, holidays, and some nights.  Work will be performed both inside and outside.

Compensation Information:


Interns will receive a living allowance stipend in addition to free furnished housing, utilities (water, electricity, wifi) and laundry facilities. Housing will be located at Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge, just 18 miles from South Padre Island, and will include shared sleeping quarters with no more than 2 persons per room, communal kitchen, bathroom, and laundry facilities.  No pets are allowed.
